Chiropractors during Pregnancy and after

mommyofone by mommyofone Talking(January 2007) (rank 123rd)
At 7 months along I was experiencing major pain in my lower back and hips.  It was painful to the point that I couldn't even go for a walk around the block!  At the recommendation of a friend who worked for a chiropractor I made an appointment and the rest
of my pregnancy was virtually pain free!   I had weekly visits and after each visit felt like a new person.  A day or two before my scheduled visits I would start to experience some pain, but not as severe as before I had started.

I have continued my chiropractic care after birth.  It has helped due to the strain on my back from carrying the car seat, having my daughter lie on me, playing with her, and the neck strain from looking down on her during feedings or reading.

I am so glad that I took the advice of my friend.  The doctor even worked through a payment schedule and adjusted payments as insurance did not cover very much.  So if you think that this may help, consult an office near you and see if they will work with you if money is also an issue.
It helped for me and is still helping to this day!

The following information is from the 2002 Back Talk Systems, Inc. brochure titled: Pregnancy and the Chiropractic lifestyle.  www.backtalksystems.com  Italicised portions are my comments.

Chiropractors are experts in the care of the bones, nerves, muscles, and connective tissue that make up 60%of your body.  All of the joints in your body are part of this musculo-skeletal system and its optimal function is necessary for overall good health.
1) Many women find their labor shorter and experience less discomfort if they've received chiropractic care.
I found that my actual pushing time was far less than many first-time mothers, less than an hour!  I can't say for sure that it was due to the chiropractic care, but that is what I contribute it too.  Due to my cervix not dilating properly I still had a long labor though.
2) Modified approaches can make chiropractic adjustments for pregnant Moms easy and more comfortable.
I was nervous about this as I wondered, "how can I be adjusted without lying on my stomach".  My doctor had me lay on my side for most of the adjustments and sit in a chair for my neck adjustments.
3) As the center of gravity changes, so does the stress to the spine.
I could definitely feel the stress!  I had pains in my back that I had never experienced before!
4) Regular chiropractic checkups, along with other healthy habits, create the best opportunity for a healthy, happy baby.

This period of rapid development, hormonal changes, the laxity of connective ligaments, and shifting of weight-bearing structures, may cause many pregnant women to experience low back pain.
Besides helping to relieve the discomfort many expectant mothers experience, chiropractic care helps normalize nervous system function.  This is an important component of overall good health.
Constant structural changes, physical and emotional stresses provide the opportunity for beneficial chiropractic care during all stages of pregnancy.

I hope that this information is helpful to all out there who are currently pregnant and experiencing back pain.  It may help...give it a try!

Re: Chiropractors during Pregnancy and after

I had the same back trouble when I was pregnant with my first. At about 4-5 months, I started getting this pain on the back that prevents me from standing up for more than 30 minutes. It was very very painful. And it really didn't matter if I was sitting down either. So I saw a chiropractor and it helped a lot. After I gave birth, the pain was still there, so I kept on seeing my chiropractor.

Chiropractors and pregnancy... great mix!

Chiropractors during Pregnancy and after
I saw my chiro when I was preganant and the releif from the pain was fantastic.
I continue to see her and I can at least play with Miss Cheeky Chops pain free for about 3 weeks.

I wanted to take Olivia to see my chiro, but my hubby thought she was too young at 2. I have since taken her and she has had 3 visits  and doesn't need to go back for 3 months. Some of her behaviour issues cleared up after the first visit - poor girl was in pain and couldn't tell us.

Olivia now can tell me when her back is sore and what we do to fix it, so I can recommend  it to anyone who is thinking about itm

Chiropractors during Pregnancy and after
Agree, I only went to see my now chiropractor after straining really badly my sacroiliac joint and only after two months of the initial injury...so I was desperate (ie. could barely walk). After a few sessions, I could actually walk without pain..and I believe very much so in chiropractors based on my true life experience. So I didn't think twice about going to the chiro while I was pregnant, during and after. If it's anything to go by, my entire labour was 2.5 hours...the last 0.5 (30mins) was spent pushing. Based on my experience (and my choice of chiropractor was one that I felt comfortable with and who has a nurturing way of adjusting me) this really worked. I did go to a few before finding one that I was very happy with.

Good Advice

My friend did/does do this and she swears by it.

Another thing she has done since her daughters were born is taken them to a baby chiropractor ( don't know the proper name ) this has helped both her girls with their posture.

Not saying this is for everyone just merely an option lol
