Like a Lot the Port a Cot

LaRenae by LaRenae Talking Back(January 2007) (rank 39th)

It is true that many high dollar big pieces of baby equipment do not stand the test of time ... Many baby items are used for a short time and then forgotten (like the swing that was passed on to us in like new condition and that we are passing on in the same condition).

We did not research the topic enough when searching for a car seat because we were pressed for time .... and we are now faced with purchasing a new high dollar car seat even though our other one is still in perfect condition ... (baby has out grown the one we bought originally)

One high dollar and nice piece of baby equipment that does not have a usage expiration is my Port a Cot. Once my port a cot or "play pen" has been used for it's intended purpose of being a portable crib and nap time place it will then be used for a safe place for "time outs" ......  Later it could be used for a safe haven for puppies or kittens or such ... or maybe it could even be a "toy box" to store stuffed animals and such in ! Such a versatile piece of equipment ! Worth the initial investment ...

We also researched and purchased a sleeping crib that was just as versatile .... It was a high dollar item also, so we bought a sleeping crib that would stand the test of time and last us for years. The baby crib will convert when our boy is ready for a toddler bed with guard rails to keep our boy from rolling out .... and going from baby crib to toddler bed will fit the same mattress ! No extra purchases ! Then later in life the whole frame converts into a head board for a full bed and at that time we will need to purchase a new mattress and frame  ....

When purchasing high dollar items necessary for babies, do your research and find items that will stand the test of time ...... items that you can use for years ....... Find items that are transitional ... and can be used for multiple purposes .......

Because life changes so quickly and our needs do too ....... It is important to research and choose baby items that last ...........

perfect potty
In keeping with choosing baby items that last ... I found the perfect potty ! It starts out as one unit that sits on the floor : a baby potty with the "bowl" and seat with handles/lid. Later the seat part with handles/lid comes off and it can be placed onto the grown up's potty and the "bowl" is then used as a stepping stool for little ones to get up on the big potty (the added toddler seat fits little bottoms and keeps them from falling in) .... Then later the whole thing turns into a two step stepping stool !  A nice find ! I found it on ebay and it is all plastic manufactured by "Safety 1st" .... a baby brand name that is always reasonably price and a brand I trust ....

Canada NOT allowed to use second hand Car Seats!
I know in Canada that you are not allowed to pass on car seats as they might not meet the requirements again.. Say like in 10 or 5 years time for that matter. That's why you have to buy one from brand new from the store. Now if you have a baby right away then you can use it, but you are not allowed to sell them to anyone or give them away. Strollers you can buy second hand, they don't have no requirements to be met. I would defiently look into the car seat thing though, I know with the department of motor vechicle you can get more information and actually the police would be able to give you those answers to your questions about the car seats!

Canada NOT allowed to use second hand Car Seats!
I did not know this about Cananda ... might also be true for USA ... anyone know ? Please let us know ... I know that when we left the hospital with our new baby we were escorted to the car by the head nurse and we were not allowed to leave with our new baby until he was properly strapped into the car seat. Once the nurse was satisfied that baby was safe then we got to go ...
