Electrical cords in the home

allison2aaron by allison2aaron Speaking(January 2007) (rank 500+)

As my bub has become mobile, we are faced with her sudden curiosity for all things around her.

two of our biggest items we needed to fix was to hide necessary cords and close doorways (where there are no doors) without the added expense. We wanted to keep bubs

out of the kitchen whilst still in the learning and understanding phase.

We found that getting pvc piping (which comes in all sizes and thicknesses) is a great way to hide cords so bub wont chew on them.  At the same time the benefit of hiding all those ugly cords was a blessing.

With the door ways, we scouted around for old cots from second hand stores, garage sales and refuse shops, that are past their used by date. Dismantling them with a few minor adjustments these gates are now a perfect size for the door ways yet, and a great inexpensive option.

This has advantages when renting properties and being stuck with gates that dont fit another rental property.

Additionally this avoids the expense of spending big monies on baby gates.  I was amazed at the prices and thought my home made gates worked as well if not better and helps to keep bubs safe and in an area where she is still free to roam and explore.

Has anyone any other ideas or projects that worked successfully for them which kept bubs safe, but allowing them to explore their boundaries?

Another
Another thing that lots of parents forget to do is put up the cords on Blinds.  They are dangerous to children and pets also.

Electrical Plug outlet covers!

Also maybe electrical plug outlet covers.. They are great, so that their little fingers cant get into the sockets!! Always keep a gate near stairs to block them from going up because my daughter has mastered this and i had to get a gate that some what fits..(on the wall on the one side and the other side its a little finiky because the stairs are in the way, well railing I mean!!)

Um... Something I'm gonna try and hopefully it works well is, you can get some type of foam covers, you use them to cover other stuff(i can't remember exactly what they cover but you can find them in your local hardware store because i used to work in one and that's where i remember seeing them from!!) and if you have a coffee table that has round legs(like mine does) put them around it and if they hit their head it would be soft instead of being hit by metal!!

Safety

We always made sure that all extention cords etc were out of the way aswell, as we knew she'd probably end up biting one of them, so we were carefull aswell.

Great article too.
