First Dentist Appointment

allyp by allyp Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 7th)

I was watching the news tonight and they were talking about babies first teeth. They said that you should make an appointment for your baby to see a dentist when they are 12 months old(just to see how they are developing and make sure everything is going right). Now if your baby don't have any teeth like mine, then at the first sign of a tooth showing you are suspose to make an appointment for 6 months after it showing.
Now it is your decision on when you want to take your baby to see the dentist but these are only guide lines.

Me myself I am setting up an appointment for my daughter to see a dentist 6 months from now because she's starting to show teeth, 3 I think (or it could be more) now.

confusing

This issue has confused me a great deal for a while now. I've seen articles on magazines and online where moms are told to take their children to the dentist as soon as the first one comes out or at least by age 1. I brought this up with my son's pediatrician and he said 3 years old will be a good age to take him. And then I hear some moms around me who has already taken their children to a dentist before 3.

Anyway, I've decided that I will probably take my son by 2 1/2 or by 3. He is not eating that many sweets and doesn't have bad habits, as far as sleeping with milk in his mouth. And I am able to use an electric tooth brush on him without a problem.

Thanks for sharing this though!

confusing
It is confusing, I do have to agree.. I am only going to bring her in because her gums on the bottom are pushing outwards and I dont know if thats a problem or not?? (they just feel different when I rub my fingers over them) I will have to wait and see I think. Because hubbys' medical coverage don't start until April 1st I think or maybe a little earlier.. I HOPE!!

Austin hasn't seen the doctor yet, I think it is $200 for a  check up if you aren't covered.  I should be covered soon and when I am I am gonna take myself and Austin is right away

I totally agree.. I don't have the money yet either. That's why I'm waiting for hubby's medical to kick in, which should be when he's been there for 3 months. So March 27!! YAY, then I'm making an appointment for me and then Cadence!!!

In Victoria, If your child is of school age the school dental van should is free if they hold a valid health care card, or if your child is in a special or special developmental school. Non card holders pay a fee of $27 per Child (maximum $108 per family) per course of care, which includes an examination (check up) and all general treatment, Primary care. Payment is made either by credit card, cheque or money order made payable to DHSV (Dental Health Services Victoria) (cash is not accepted) Payments cannot be claimed through private health insurance. Hope this helped some in Vic.

going to the dentist

taking your children to the dentist at such a young age is purely to familiarise them with going. I have been working with children in dental for the last 6 yrs.

even taking your kids to your dental appt and having them sit on the chair with you is enough reassurance for them that going to see the dentist is OK.

just a hint!!! don't fuss over them while they are there because it makes the whole experience overwhelming.

going to the dentist
Good point.. Thanks for that hint.. I think I will be doing that when I have to go to the dentist next.. Right now I'd go but I don't have dental but in a few more months I will! I think if my mom would have done that when I was a baby or toddler for that matter it would of made my whole experience with dentists sooo much more better!!

Dental appointments
My kids had there first dental appointment in grade prep, I started with introducing the tooth brush when they all turned one. I didn't expect them to brush as they had it in there mouth i was happy. They had a check over and the school dental van nurse said there teeth are fine we will re check again next year. don't worry to much about baby's first teeth as look as you introduce it and make brushing a part of the every day schedule your childs teeth will be fine and it will establish a good daily routine for bub when he/she is school aged. First teeth drop out and re grow. Good Luck.

Dentist

I've never taken my daughter to see a dentist and she's 4 in March, but each parent is different.

When she was born i made the choice of her to see a dentist when she started school.

To each their own right? Like I said it's only a guide line!! I think my mom did the exact same thing with me when I was younger, she waited til I was starting school, or maybe preschool.. But I know I went that's for sure.. (I'm afraid of them)
