The next time you go to visit a mother who has just given birth give some thought to the present that you buy her. I know that flowers, chocolates and cards are the norm but, personally, the most wonderful and thoughtful present I received after giving birth to my daughter
was a voucher for a massage. Oh, it was glorious getting a massage after nine months of carrying a baby and feeling like I was neglecting my Body and my Self. By far the best presents are presents that aim to celebrate the mother on her achievement of carrying a baby to term and getting through the rigours of birth. Let's face it, most people have already got the pink or blue bath towels and rubber duckies before their baby comes along anyway.
So, here are some "mummy nurturing" ideas for presents:
- vouchers for massages, facials, pedicures and other body pampering services.
- body pampering packages (e.g. some nice hand lotion, face cream etc).
- bath products (everyone loves to luxuriate in a bath)
- a subscription to a magazine like "Parenting" or "Mother & Baby" or just a magazine you know she will enjoy.
- a clothes voucher (for when the figure returns - which it will!).
- nappy service.
- a house-cleaner for a month.
- a voucher for a hair-cut, make-over or style consultant for a new look.
- A book about the journey she is about to undertake - I personally loved "Buddhism for Mothers" by Sarah Napthali, which another wonderful friend bought me.
- A journal to record her thoughts and feelings about her new role.
- A tarot reading or visit to a clairvoyant (if she's into that kind of thing).
- a half-day meditation retreat (if she's into that sort of thing).
- a voucher for a dinner for her and hubby at their favourite resteraunt.
- personal vouchers (these are credit notes you give her from you that she can redeem at her leisure) such as a) a cooked dinner, b) vacuuming the house, c) the gardening, d) washing & ironing, e) foot massage.
Anyway, hopefully this gives you some ideas for the next time someone you really value experiences one of the most significant events in her life.
