pre- eclampsia

kitten by kitten Speaking(January 2007) (rank 340th)

I thought since i suffered from pre- eclampsia and several of my family did i would share some information and experiences with regards to it but I would say that if you are pregnant and worried that you may have it then go straight to the midwife, doctor i did

as it is better to be safe.

Pre eclampsia only happens in pregnancy and can develop into eclampsia which can be fatal for mother and babies but with good medical care the development into eclampsia does not often occur.  Pre eclampsia can lead to the baby being born premature and the only cure is delivery. People who are at a higher risk are first time mothers, over 40's, and those who have a family history of pre eclampsia.

There are many symptoms the first that I knew of was when i went to the mid wife for a routine check and they found that there was protein in the urine.  They did tests as it could just be an infection and not a symptom of pre eclampsia. In my case as I had several other symptoms it was the start of pre eclampsia. The protein shows up as the kidneys stop functioning correctly.

Another symptom was high blood pressure mine started low at the start of the pregnancy but at 30 weeks had raised sharply and continued to stay high this can be controlled with medication. Dizzy spells, fainting, seeing flashy lights ( although i saw black cobwebs) are another sign of pre eclampsia i was told this was caused by the high blood pressure.

Prolonged head aches this is a noticeable symptom i had constant head aches which i thought were because i was just tired but these were again linked to the pre eclampsia.

I was kept in hospital for a few days then i had to come back every day to be monitered to make sure nothing got worse. I had regular scans as the main effect is that the baby can stop growing as they are not getting enough nutrients. For me I was lucky and this did not happen until 40 week scan and then an induction was booked. ( little man was born day before that anyway) he was 4 days overdue and ended up weighing 5lb10).

Sometimes the doctors can be very overwhelming and to be honest i felt that they were trying to scare us. One nurse would say one thing and then another something else. There are some good support networks online and it felt better for me to have some information from other who had experienced this and also some factual advice.

I hope this can be of some help.

Re: pre- eclampsia

My first pregnancy I had pre-eclampsia, toxemia, high blood pressure, protein in my urine at 30 weeks and then as the weeks progressed and got closer to deliver it seemed to get worse..  I didn't know on what was happening I would get horrific dizzy spells couldn't do much around the house otherwise I would feel like I was fainting.  At 36 weeks I had to have a ceasarian as I also got gestational diabetes which didn't also help the matter.  My son was a big boy weighing a whopping 4kg.  You wouldn't think he was now as he is thin.  My second pregnancy was fine and I didn't receive anything besides gestational diabetes and high blood pressure and had to undergo a ceasarian the doctors thought she was going to be huge baby and she was breach (feet first).  At 38 weeks she weighed 3.3kg and she was fine.

Pre-eclampsia
I had severe pre-eclampsia with my first pregnancy which led to my son being delivered at 37weeks by emergency caesarian (he was also in distress).  He was 2.4kg (about 5lb 7oz).  I had high blood pressure, headaches, visual disturbances and also severe abdominal pain (under the bottom ribs).  It felt like heartburn but so bad I would be throwing up.  I didn't swell up at all, so that is not really a good sign to watch for necessarily.

With my second pregnancy I took low dose aspirin from 12weeks to 36weeks.  My 2nd baby was delivered naturally at 40weeks weighing 3.3kg.  The only sign of pre-eclampsia was while I was in labour.  So, just because you have had it once does not mean it will happen again!

Well written article!

pre eclampsia
i didnt get this in my first pregnancy pre eclampsia. im 34 weeks pregnant with number two and today i notice that my hands and swollen only because my ring usually is to big and dosent fit properly and now it is tight to get off and my hand are red,  i looked at my feet cuz i thought that maybe it could be pre eclampsia and there a bit swallon as well one foot is more swollen then the other. i have noticed that i have been seeing flashy lights but not that often and feeling unsusally sick as well. so i decided to look up on minti and found your advice, thanks for writing this as i would not have none the symtoms of it. i have my check up this week so im going to tell the doctor what i have been experiencing. someone did tell me thou that if it is bad i might have to have the baby straight away im not sure if that true or not.

pre eclampsia

If the symptoms are bad and the baby is suffering then they will deliver the baby although they kept telling me better out than in. They scanned the baby to make sure was growing and the right size and only spoke about delivery when there was no significant growth, it is best to check it out and then the doctor can monitor the baby. I had swollen ankles a symptom i forgot to put on the list also got carpel syndrome in my hands as well. where you get pins and needles.  Good luck at the doctors if anything is wrong they will look after you.

Pre eclampsia
I had this with my son too but it didn't happen until I was in labour! My blood pressure was only slightly high but luckily I was already in the hospital. The worst part for me was the stuff that they pumped into me via the drip for the next 20 hours after the birth. That was horrible. But when I went up to the maternity ward i had a room to myself as they had to keep an eye on me.....that was good!

PreEclampsia

I to only found out when I had protein in my urine, I also had the high blood pressure.

It was the day before my baby shower, I woke up in excrushiating pain as both my calf muscles cramped up, then the swelling came, my foot went from a size 9 to a 10 in half an hour! I went to the hospital after ringing them at 9.90pm & them telling me to come in straight away. I was admitted into hospital  the next morning 12am. I ended up having my baby shower in there as there was also talk I might have to stay until the birth. As I lived in Geelong & I was in Bendigo I wanted to go home so after 4 days in hossie I was discharged only to go straight back to Geelong Hospital. There I was monitored through out my pregnancy. I had go & see them every 2nd day but if I was feeling anything odd I had to go straight back in. Taylor was born 4 days before he was due weighing a healthy 3705grams ( 8lb 2oz ).

I would wish PreEclampsia on anyone not even my worst enemy.
