children with alot of bruising

kelfa by kelfa Speaking(January 2007) (rank 500+)

Hi my name is Kelly and I have a 7yr old daughter and a 4month old son.

MY daughter started grade prep 2 years ago , she is a very active little girl  ,loves her monkey bars and loves climbing, so she was comming home with alot of bruises

all the time just thinking shes just like any other normal kid, untill the school rang child protection on me, I couldnt beleive it I was devistated, so it was then her bruising started to worry me, maybe she wasnt like everyone else, so I took her to our doctor and she rerffered me to get some blood taken, My daughter was terrified absolutly terrified of needles, she just wouldnt let us take her blood we tried and tried but no go . So i took her home and let it go for a while.  Then One night I was at home watching All Saints on TV and a little boy was taken in with alot of bruising, he  ended up having a protein deficiancy, so then I started to think straight away  maybe somthing like that was wrong with my Daughter. Next day I took her straight to the doctors, they took her blood (they put the numbing patch on her) dont know why they didnt do that in the first place, but anyway we got her blood. well we went home after the doctors as normal , then at 9.30 that night I got a phone call from gribbles lab saying I must take Hayley straight into the childrens hospital asap, well you could imagine I went into panic mode , not having any Idea what was wrong with her. When we got there they addmitted her straight away and the told me hayley has a low plate count also known as ITP (bleeding Disorder) She was admitted for a week , she had lots of bloods taken and also a bone marrow test.

The Doctors told me this condition can get better on its own, I have recently taken her back for more bloods and still no change, I need to take her back again in three months and if still no  change i will have to sit down with a team of doctors to discusss treatment.  With this condition Hayley Isnt  allowed to go on her monkey bars and climb high things and play contact sport, incase she gets a head injury which could be fatal.  It is hard living like this, every kids cry i hear i think its her and my heart stops, but i have to try and be strong for her and let her live as normally as possible. So if your child seems to have alot of bruising please get them checked out ..........

Re: children with alot of bruising
Hi
Thank you for sharing about this relatively unknown disorder
We now are able to look at bruising in a different light and maybe even save one child if they have this
Luv Deb

Thanks for your note.
They did a simple blood test on Rachel, but everything came up normal.  She doesn't get "normal" bruises all over.  She gets black spots on her lower legs.  We did find one under her arm once.  The doctor is not worried at all.  It just seems so strange that her leg would be all black and no one is worried.  We did go back to the doc and she wrote us a scrip for another type of blood test (maybe this one checks platelets?).  We'll see how it goes.

So glad your found out
It's so frustrating when you just don't know how to help your child.  It sounds like you are right on track for helping her take care of herself too.   I hope that this article helps someone else in a similar situation.  Thanks for sharing your story.

Thank God for All Saints
You must have been so worried. I've learned so much from TV shows like this & think they do an excellent job in educating us. That was an interesting episode... I remember the poor nurse having to ring welfare, what a dreadful position to be in, but if someone's not looking out for the kids then it could be the one time a child really does get hurt or even killed. Thankfully shows like All Saints let us see that not all bruising is because of abuse. Hang in there, hopefully your daughters situation will be one of the cases that clear up by itself. Best of luck

Can also be indicative of ...

Just as it is important to find out what is causing it, it's equally important not to jump to conculsions.

Excessive bruising can also indicate an elevated anti-thrombin 3 level.  (My son has this problem!)

Wishing you all the best!

It is hard

I am crying for you. I know how all this feels and it is frightening. My daughter Brielle has had Chronic ITP since she was 6 months old. She is now 8. Brielle will probably have it for the rest of her life. I have found something that works to help keep the platelet count up naturally though and that is foods that contain vitamin K. I will be listing some of the foods that I know of in my group if you want to take a look. I hope everyday that brielle will just not have it anymore but it dosn't look like it is going to happen any time soon.

Hugs and kisses to you

 Lexi xxx

It is hard
Hi Lexi, Has Brielle had any treatment done at all for her condition, just curious. The Doctors have suggested steroids to me which have major side effects, which they think this treatment is most effective, but I really dont like the Idea of my daughter taking steroids.

Either way...
If my child was showing signs of such bruising, I'd be at the doctor's office as well.  If it is abuse, I want to know about it.  If it is a medical problem, I want to know about it.  Excellent job on getting to the bottom of it, it's just a pity that it took a while to get the blood test sorted out.  Kids can be soooo difficult with things like that!  But you got there and that's the main thing.  You should be proud of yourself. <<pat on the back>>
