Febril convulsions

supamummy by supamummy Walking(January 2007) (rank 500+)

when i was a child i remember me and my brother suffering from febril convulsions, by suffering i mean we had them more regular than most children do.

i know children to be able to have a tempareture of over 40 before they will have a convulsion but the

second me or my brother got a fever even the slightest we would fit.

when i had my first child she was never ill or anything untill she reached a year old, she got a slight cold thats when it began she would fit about once a month if not more.

my second daughter had her first febril convulsion at about 8 months she had a viral infection.

afue weeks ago my eldest had a febril convulsion due to an ear infection within a couple of days my youngest had one because she was teething.

basically what i am saying is that in the last two years i have had to deal with alot of them and am starting to get the hang of things.

usually you will know when your child is getting a fever maybe their eyes will get a glassy affect or they just wont be their normal self. it isnt always that easy to tell until u really know your childs routine if you like.

If your child does go into a febril convulsion their body will usually go stiff and maybe they will do a sort of jumping thing with their arms.

what you should do is put them into the recovery position (not on their back) strip them down, and get a warm cloth (not cold or hot) and wipe down their head and back i usually talk to my girls while they are convulsing it usually keeps them a bit more calm.

some things you must know are:

the main thing is to try and keep your childs temperature down so that they dont go into a convulsion there is many medicents that can help that you could just read the box for advice on doses but i think it is best to go to your gp and ask what your child should be given.

also NEVER PUT YOUR CHILD INTO A BATH EVEN IF TEPID WHILE THEY ARE FITTING.

you can put your child into a warm bath to cool his/her temp down so they dont have a fit but this doesnt always work.

it is one of the most scariest experiances seeing your child go through that but just emagine how scary it is for them.

RE: Febril convulsions
Hi, my son Drew (14 months) had a Febril convulsion today and it was honestly the scariest thing I have experienced. To put it bluntly I thought I was possibly watching my son die in  my arms. (Pre convulsion) Symptoms, fever and cough- then suddenly out of the blue (at the playground) he had a Febril convulsion... rolling eyes, tense body, blue face, and then...nothing like he had stopped breathing. SCARY.....

very scary

It must be very scary to see a baby have convulsions! I can't imagine what I would have done had my son gone through one. Thankfully, he hasn't yet.

I had a febrile convulsion when I was 11 years old and it was the strangest feeling. I was concious, but I couldn't stop shaking. Everything around me looked like they were coming nearer and nearer so I was screaming, "no, I don't want you!". Of course my relatives didn't know what I was talking about.

Very scary
I'm seven years older than my niece, when she was a baby she suffered from convulsions, I'll never forget the first one I experienced with her, she was only 4 or 5 months old and I remember it like it was yesterday, I was being the doting aunty checking in on her and noticed she was not looking right, now I was only 7, I turned on the light and screamed for my sister.  When my son had his first fever I was terrified it would happen to him.  Great advice
