fun in the sun in a drought

Anonymous Author (January 2007)
Hi guys. Being in Victoria, Australia, we are currently in a drought and are on stage 3 water restrictions.

we have 40degree celcius days, and we cant even put the sprinkler on for our children! I HAVE THE ANSWER for fun with water.

I have bought Kobe
a water spray gun ( like the one's hair dressers use) It cost $1.50AU from a cheap $2 store. i actually bought 2.
The last few days, Kobe and i have been chasing each other around the back yard spraying each other! it so much fun, and only needs minimal water. I have also checked with our water authority, and it is fine to use these.
Its so much fun, and is great on a hot day!

I also got Kobe a bubble gun. You press the button and blows bubbles out continually. This is also heaps of fun outside on the hot days! its just so amazing watching his face light up and watch him trying to catch the bubbles, especially when there is a slight breeze blowing!

Also, Ice blocks are so fun as well. i have been making coloured ice blocks by using a drop of food dye. This has no sugar ( cordial is full of it) and makes water in a cup look cool with funky ice cubes floating in it!. Kobe also loves sucking on them while sitting on the back porch!

So just a few suggestions for those hot days. but REMEMBER to SLIP SLOP SLAP. I know it can be hard to keep a hat on a 2yr old, but if you wear a hat too, they tend to keep it on! and you can get FUNKY kids sun screen that is coloured from your chemist. Its a gymick to get you to buy it, i know, but it works!

well have fun, slip slop slap and enjoy playing outside!!!

Hot days without a sprinkler....or a pool
great idea!  we are always looking for more fun ways to enjoy "chill out" literally, without increasing water usage!  this should be sent to local councils etc!

water guns.

great idea.

We don't have water either - tank water for us. So I find this a particularly good idea.

Water Restrictions.
My parents don't actually have water restrictions because they don't actually have any water.... I could not believe it when we visited them last month. They had bore water but the bore ran dry, as they were not the only ones to use it. Some people make the silly mistake of thinking just because they are on bore water they can still water their gardens... But eventually the water table gets so low they can't even use that. They brought a tank and now buy their water... They ration it but as there is only two of them they do okay. They have a river going through their back yard, but even that has dried and my mother tells me all the fish have gone belly up and the crows are having a feeding frenzy.
I could not believe just how dry Australia has become. It is amazing to see, every thing so thirsty. I actually was able to stand at the bottom of my mothers river which would normally be way over my head.
I now live in Canada and left before the drought set in.   I hope and pray that you guys have relief some time soon.
