A good way of holding a windy baby |

My 3 week old daughter Natalya gets a lot of wind and hiccups. Possibly due to being breastfed using a nipple shield (am currently in the process of weaning off the nipple shield).
The other day we dropped into my husbands work to get a form signed. Naturally
his workmates wanted to hold her so we handed her over. Haydon dragged me away for about 20 minutes to see the person that needed to sign the form (yes I was reluctant but many of his workmates are midwives so objection overruled).
When we returned one of the midwives was sitting with my daughter hanging over her shoulder sleeping happily. While it may not look comfortable my daughter was very comfortable.
We were shown how to do it – baby’s tummy on your shoulder, bottom facing forward and you hold the legs for security and if needed pat the child’s bottom. If she does not have wind my daughter does not really like this position but when she has wind it is a great way to hold her to settle her and she happily falls asleep.
My husband said that he finds that in order to get Natalya into right position (belly on the right part of his shoulder) for him it feels as if she is going to keep slipping over his back (he has bony shoulders). I don’t find that but it is important to get the baby’s tummy on your shoulder for them to get the relief the position provides.
If you are trying to settle a windy baby I recommend giving the hold a try.
