The importance of watching your kids eat.

monyq83 by monyq83 Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 13th)

Firstly I just want to apologise if this offends anyone.  I know this advice might seem a bit pointless at first.  As theres really not alot of people that dont supervise their kids when they eat, but for those of us that just take a simple thing like eating

for granted sometimes, (and come on, lets be honest here, weve all done it on at least one occasion) Im begging you to re-think hanging out that load of washing while the kids have lunch, or going out to check the mail while they have their afternoon tea, it can wait till they are finished eating.

The reason I say this is that we could have lost our son today. He choked on a peice of bread. Thank god he was sitting right behind me or as I write this, he could have been looking down on us from heaven.

It doesnt take long for a child to die from choking, in fact that shower you wanted to take while the kids eat breakfast could mean the difference between life and death.

So from one parent to another, please re-think stepping out of the room for just 5 minutes, the next time your child eats. Love MonyQ.

Once again
Hi
Once again a fantastic reminder.
Sometimes while going over older articles i see some that need to be brought to the top again as we become so complacent.
How many of us wander around doing our own thing while kids are eating
When Megan was little she was eating a life saver of all things and got bumped and she started coughing a bit then settled down and walked to our bedroom where her father was.  For some reason i followed her i still don't know why.
She stood in the door of our bedroom and dropped to the floor and lay on the carpet like she always did....i suddenly realised she wasn't breathing and yelled at her father.
He immediately picked her up and thumped her on the back while holding her partially upside down and the lolly came up and she started screaming.
Had i not follower her that night and just gone about my own thing talking to our visitors in the lounge she would not be here today as her father thought she was doing her usual of lying on the carpet being near him while he had friends over.
Don't take anything for granted with kids..they are too precious and can lose their lives wat too quick
Luv deb

Choking

This is great! My daughter is 11 and she has been trained in infant first aid and CPR (by her own request) because she had a choking experience as a child. She was afraid that something could happen with her 11 month old brother. And...it did. About a month ago Gabriel was having a snack in his high chair and Sidney was also sitting at the table snacking. A friend walked up to drop off some spices for our dinner and so I stepped away for a moment to get them. Surely as I spoke for a split second to my friend, I heard screaming and then silence. Gabriel began to choke so Sidney literally threw her parfait across the room, grabbed him from his chair and performed the correct functions from there. We ran to the kitchen to see Sidney wiping Gabriel's little mouth as her elbow came up to wipe her own tears. She ran to me and I held her tight. She did the right thing but I still should have taken the baby with me to the door or not went to the door at all. Gabriel was just fine and in fact was coughing so he truly wasn't in immediate danger but he could have been. That was the last time that I walked away while he was snacking. We sit together to eat now or I am at least in the kitchen doing chores. Sidney was great and did the right thing but I hated that she was in that position. I was only at the door a moment and a moment is all that it takes.

Great reminder to all parents. Thank you! Things happen so very quickly and we need to be there. Great, great, great reminder!! Wow! I am so glad that your child is ok.

Oh Mony I so glad he is ok, it is definitely a scary thing to deal with.  I have to admit I'm one who ducks off to do things while bubbys are eating but I won't anymore.  Just to add a piece of first aid to this comment.

When a child is choking please don't just pat them on the back while they are in an upright position, this has the potential to actually lodge the item they are choking on futher down so that you can't get it out.

What to do:

1. Don't panic - this stresses the child out just as much as it does you.

2. Lay them over your knee head down.

3. Use the heel of your hand and gently hit them between the shoulders blades pushing towards their head, keep doing this until the item dislodges itself.

4. Give them a big kiss and cuddle and hold them tight, you can bet they were just as scared as you were.

Love Tam xxxxxx

This is a wonderful post! Great information for parents that don't know what they should do. We all tend to get very excited in a crisis when we really need to try to stay calm. Thank you!

Also, parents can sign up for Infant CPR classes for their entire family at most Red Cross locations. It is very inexpensive and sometimes free.

The importance of watching your kids eat.

This made me think back to the days...oh so long ago... when I would put kat into her highchair with her meal and potter around while she ate....sometimes in and out of the room while I cleaned or something...I tempted fate a lot when I think about it...

Thanks mony

Safety first
You are so right how it can happen so quickly.  My son was choking today on an orange and while he managed to clear his throat on his own, we were glad to be there to help him if he needed it.

A timely reminder
How quickly it happens. Thank you for reminding us to keep a more watchful eye on our little treasures... but its not just while eating, there are so many little things that can go wrong. I know I've been guilty of leaving them in the bath 'for just a moment' while I ducked out to turn the meat over, or answered the phone... Anything could have happened & it only takes a few seconds.

Kids and Eating
I couldn't agree with you more!  I watched as my son turned blue choking on a piece of carrot when he was very young.  Thankfully, the carrot dislodged itself and he was fine.  I ALWAYS stay nearby while they are eating.  If I have to step out of the kitchen and it gets quiet, I call out and ask how they are doing.  If I don't get a response, I immediately go to them.  They have learned over the years too that they need to answer me when I call!

Thank goodness you were there. I'm so glad that your little boy is okay. What a lucky reminder of how careul we shoud be. Thankyou so much for reminding us, although we all mean well we can slip up at times. Mind you this would be an excellent time to remind other parents as well of the importance of knowing first aid. Again, so glad you and yours are okay!! Hayley xx

watch while eating

I'm always watching my child while she's eating because basically, every time i eat, so does she. It was a great article too, and i don't see it as pointless. Sometimes we just need to be reminded of things.
