Childhood Asthma

Anonymous Author (January 2007)
Asthma Is a Life threatening Illness, that you just don't over come. In server cases it must be treated every day with inhailors and other medications. Natural therapy's do not work. Hopefully soon medical science finds a cure!

I Discovered i was an Asthma sufferer when i was
16 years old. luckily my mother is a chronic sufferer,
I wouldn't have know what it is or how to treat it.

My family went on a Camping trip in the middle of a Victorian winter, to a place called Mansfield.
After a horrible night of rain, i woke up freezing.
It didn't take long to realize i was saturated. the rain had flooded my tent and my sleeping bag was soaking.

We Traveled around Mansfield, Bright Mount buffalo for two weeks during our school holidays, easter break late  March threw to early April here.

On our trip to mount Buffalo, my family and i went for a Hike to the top and as the altitude got higher and higher, my chest became tighter and tighter.
I said I'd have wait where i was, to my Parents, as i wasn't feeling well.
I was exhausted and needed to rest. I needed help coming back down, from my Dad.
Mum and dad took me to the doctors in Mansfield, we discovered that i had Broncular Pneumonia.

After the holiday about two month after in fact, i was over my flu and felling better, just a little weak it was pretty bad, I didn't eat for the first week as i was to weak and i think i slept the entire time.
I was running late for my bus and had to run, so i didn't miss it.

This is when I had my first Full blow Asthma Attack.

I Had a Prickling, Itching feeling in my lungs and chest, it was extremely hard to breathe inward, It sounded like cats screaming when i breathed in, i was hot, I had a head ache and i had pins and needles in my fingers and toes.
I got of the bus and went to the nearest phone box and rang my mum to pick me up.
As she is a sufferer of this disease also, she knew i was having an asthma attack and took me to the hospital.
I was put in a cubical, and treated, luckily i didn't have to stay in hospital, and declared an asthmatic by my doctor.

After seeing my mother have asthma attacks over the years, i was able to treat this as a fact of life. Most of my mothers side of the family has it..
Some people who have never seen an Asthma Attack, don't understand what it is, or what Happens when a Person is having one, as they have never experienced this, not because its your fault, there are a lot of diseases i don't know about either.

I think every one needs to know what to look for, Asthma can strike anyone, of any age, people need to know what to look for:
Does  Your child:-

Have a Dry cough at night, or during sport, its like a non eventful cough. Not the same as when your child has the flu a cough that isn't quiet there"

Rattly sound in chest, not just two or three times a year. every time they are having an attack. All the time not just some of the time?.

Uses there shoulders to get air in, which leaves them tired and with drawn. The nape of neck sinks in when your child takes a breath and they use there stomach mussels to get wind. (not always only some case)?

Gets exhausted Quicker than the other children they play with and you always wonder why?

What to do if my Child has an attack.
Do not use alternative treatments on Asthmatics, these WILL NOT help your child in most cases it can make the child worse.
Take your Child, Children to the doctors or Hospital IMMEDIATELY. If you believe you child is worse than first predicted RING AN AMBULANCE IMMEDIATELY. Asthma is a life or death situation that SHOULD NOT be joked around with. To many Children die from not getting help when needed   It can only take a few seconds, for the worst to happen.

Fantastic article

Absolutely spot on.

My 6 year old suffers from Asthma. We have it managed 95% of the time as his is seasonal and I know the signs but it's still so scary, we've had a few terrifying episodes. You just feel so helpless at times.

Fantastic article - very informative

There are a few of us with Asthma isn't there...and I'm another to add to the ever growing list.

Asthma has become something that people brush off as a minor problem and it is far from that.

You have written an informative and important article....thank you!

Cheers

Asthma

Great Advice and well written

I too saw my parents (and family members) suffer from asthma all different severities. When my son was only three months old I noticed the sign in him. We have been very fortunate that he hasn’t had a major attack, I believe that since I knew what to look for, I was able to seek medical help and preventative medication early that we have been able to keep his asthma under control.
It is important for all parents who have any medical history of asthma in the family (even if it parents, grandparents – asthma can skip generations) to know what to look out for. If you have no family history but suspect that your child may suffer asthma – seek medical advice before it becomes a major attack.

Asthma
I generally use the puffer but sometimes a paper bag if I am desperate but would not muck around if it was my boy (luckily he is not asthmatic) When I was living in the central west. The wife of the hospital director of nursing had a severe asthma attack I believe she was 7-8 months pregnant. She never made it to the phone. For whatever reason she did not use the puffer in time or used it too late. I do not know But what an incredible lost. It is defintley a complaint to be taken seriously

Great advice
This is clearly written - well done!  It is good to know how it feels like, as someone who does not suffer, if someone now told me these things I would know it and know what to so about it.  Thank you
