The age in the headline is mainly a guide of when to start and when i started.
Defining night and Day
As baby gets older
As baby gets older they will start to waken more frequently to try and learn and take in there surroundings
lets say 1& a Half months.
To try and make baby aware of Day and night, set your alarm for a certain reasonable time of the day, when you think baby will awaken,
say 5:30am-6am young babies (under two months) especially don't know the difference between night and day.
Prepare baby's first bottle and when they cry, greet them with a different greeting to when you put them down try to make wake up time and sleep time the same each time so baby recognizes when its time for night and when its time for morning and play.
open the curtains, window if its warm. don't pick baby up straight away, unless they are screaming let them look around and recognize the difference. If the kids are being noisy let them. This will help baby adjust to the difference.
At night so my kids recognize night and day i have a lamp with a low wattage globe (40 watts) The television is kept to a minimum and it is quiet and dark..
When I feed bub at night i try to keep it pretty simple, I keep an eye on the time so i know when to expect bub.
I don't let bub get to upset, so he settles easily.
I change him First, before i feed him so that he is comfortable when he gets put back down.
Unless his decided to take a number two while feeding.
Then i burb Him, Health nurses have always told me that wind doesn't worry baby's bub with mine if they are windy, there play up. Nearly always if they are windy, they spit up (vomit) which wakes them.
I have had a few instances where baby has been sleeping and spat up, and started chocking which is always a VERY scary thing as they don't realize they are chocking and are still half asleep.
And Never Play at night.
Try to set a bed time early, say 6pm at night this is when the house goes into quiet mode and everything is kept more stable. Unless you have Visitor which makes it harder. But by 5 months as baby loves to sleep they should be pretty used to the comings and goings of the house and be able to stand a little noise.
Allowing bub to stay awake for 30 mins to 1 hour after a bottle (Play time) will also help defining night and day. Try not to play with bub at night this will also make bub realize the difference between night and day.
Good luck.
