Learner Drivers

monarogirl by monarogirl Talking(January 2007) (rank 500+)

Do you have teenage age children learning how to drive?

There are many new skills for them to aquire, such as parking and driving in the rain to name a couple.

But how many parents also teach them how to change a tyre?

Would your learner driver be able to do this on their own if the need arose? Would they know where to position the jack and where the spare tyre is located in the car?

Also important is the ability to check all the fluid levels under the bonnet. Sounds simple but so many people don't do this and then wonder why the car overheats when it runs out of water.

As parents we should be passing on these skills when they begin learning or even before they start to drive. I'm sure no one wuold like to get a call for help at 2am because their child is stuck on the side of the road, with a flat tyre that they have no idea how to change!

Re: Learner Drivers
I agree totally matey - however do you know how many parents don't even know how to do this for themselves?  A lot of them don't even know how to check the oil and fill the water in both their radiator and windscreen reservoirs.  When people get their bus and truck licences they need to know all this - I think basic vehicle maintenance should also be part of achieving your car licence.

Well done, Sandy, i think  everyone should know the basic skills of how to  maintain a car....you never know, when you will  need those skills.

My ex-hubby...

blew the engine of his first car, simply because no one had ever told him that his car needed oil, and as the oil light didn't work, he had nothing to alert him to the fact something was amiss - until his car went bang!

When I went for my L's I went off and also did a first aid course.  Driving around, if I did get into an accident, I'd know what to do.  When I went for my P's I went and did a basic vehicle maintenance course so if I was alone and I broke down or got a flat, I could deal with it.

Amazing how many people take info like this for granted.

great advice!
i always wanted to know the in's and out's of a car since i was a little girl! there have been times where i have been stuck on my own (car wouldn't start) and i check the basics like the battery terminals, fuse box, and so on.. i have never had a flat tyre yet, but i do know how to change tyres just in case. This advice is crucial to any parents out there who have kids with licenses, last thing you would want is a phone call to come and change a wheel
my checklist..
i always make sure i have these things in my car: Jack, spare wheel, bottle of water, spare fuses, relays and jump start cables.
thanks for sharing this monarogirl, and i like the monaro pic too!!!
xx channy

Good Point Matey...

I took for granted that Luke knew where his was, I mean please, this boy re-builds cars and engines...I was pretty sure he knew where his spare was sitting.....

but I'm kinda glad he didn't and that it took a 'female' to tell him....

Really good advice...

Brill Idea!
I cant even drive yet, but there is a course one can go on to learn basic car maintenance and it is something I am gonna do at the same time as I really dont wanna be stuck if there is something that i could do about it....great idea to teach your children to do, though the way my daughter already is at caring for cars I am sure she will be teaching me!!!
Peace

Great idea
Funny that Aidan and his mates had to call my husband to help them change a tyre once..... He knew how to change one but his mate had got a new car and no idea how to use the jack in his old school mercedes apparently they are different to a scissor jack.....  I think It should be encouraged also to get a motor vehicle mebership also Like Racq etc..... just in case great advice.......
Cheers
Angie
