you, your baby and HIV

Babies can be born with HIV.

HIV is a virus. it cause AIDS.

a woman with HIV can pass it to her baby:

  • during pregnancy
  • while giving birth
  • when breastfeeding.

baby born with HIV may:

  • get sick
    a lot
  • develop AIDS
  • and die

you can help proctect your baby from HIV!

start with HIV counseling and testing.

  • testing lets you know if you:
  • have HIV
  • need special health care for yourself and to proctect your baby

Testing plus treatment may help you to have a healthy baby.

They may also help you stay well, so you can care for your baby.

Have an HIV test if you:

  • paln to have a baby
  • are pregnant
  • want to breastfeed

talk to a doctor, nurse or counselor. before testing ask:

  • why should i be tested?
  • are there reasons not to get tested?
  • who can see my results?

After testing ask:

  • what do my results means?
  • how can i keep my baby healthy
  • where can i go for support?

Have a healthy pregnancy.

protec against HIV:

  • don't share needles for any reason.
  • use a latex condom if you have sex.(ask a doctor or nurse about having sex during pregnancy.)
  • ask your doctor or nurse about other way to protect against HIV.

get prenatal care (regular checkups), and:

  • dont use alcohol, tobaco or other drugs. get help to quit.
  • eat healthy foods.
  • get plenty of rest.
  • exercise.(talk with the doctor or nurse first)

call:

  • your state or local health department
  • the free nj AIDS hotline, 1-800-624-2377.
