Littlies And Water Activities

Anonymous Author (January 2007)
Hi all,we have just returned from fishing after having a great time out on the water...........Whilst we were out and about I noticed some really irresponsible behaviour with toddlers.I am not judging I am concerned. We were sitting in the boat fishing,Breanna fishes too(toy rod) when we had a jetski roar up
quite close.......On board was Dad operating ski toddler aprox 18 months in middle and mum on back, toddler had a life jacket on OK big plus however the Dad was going like an absolute idiot how they didn't have an accident defies my reasoning I really had a sick tummy from watching ,mum was having a hard time keeping her and bub on she was screetching,I don't know if it was out of fear or fun.

Every 15 minutes or so they went back to shore.....the child had no hat on which was fine on the ski but we were there for 3 1/2 hours and he had no protection at all.May be sunscreen was applied but in our climate it is not enough for the face.I think sometimes parents under estimate our sun's rays.Breanna  has 30+sunscreen a hat and heaps of water.I have also noticed the lack of toddlers wearing stinger suits in our tropical waters.......big no no,we also have vinegar with us at all times this applied to jelly stings is usually a difference between life and death.

In the temperatures we are receiving the beach or pool tempts us  no end, this is how it should be I just wanted  to point out a few things that I noticed slipped some other parents minds. We all love the water and it is one of the few free activities left(beach)I would just hate for some-one to lose their child out of irresponsibility or forgetfulness.Lets enjoy our climate and beaches in a fun but aware manner.Happy splashing regards Merle Ps we asked the jetski driver to slow down(nicely) he just moved away. We also caught some lovely coral trout.

You can never be too protective
My husband has had 4 moles removed and he was kind enough to give his fair skin to our son when he was born.  As a result, our lives are filled with hats, long sleeves, sunscreen and not being outside between the hours of 11 and 3.  It makes for a tough summer but these are the things you have to do as a parent.  Thanks for the reminders.

The interesting thing is that olive skin is just as susceptible to skin cancer as fair skin.....so many people are unaware of this fact. Thanks for your comment regards Merle

I have olive skin and although I was always in the sun as a child I never burned. I thought Taylor might be the same but since you said that olive skin can burn to then I'm not going to chance it he is going to slip, slop & slap this summer that's for sure, not that we go out in the heat of the day just when it starts to cool down of an evening. Thank you for opening my eyes

Slip Slop Slap

I am about to have two suspicious moles removed from my back and this is due to not applying sunscreen often enough. My kids don't go outside without it on I don't want them to have to go through the nastiness of having things removed off their bodies if I can prevent it. I think some people just don't realise the danger they are putting their children in.

Great article merle

Slip Slop Slap
Thanks Lexi,I came from the old school family where Mums considered you to be a couch potato unless you were brown as a berry.I can't remember ever wearing a hat or not being sunburnt.Mum herself used to sun bake on a daily basis.I thought her face was old looking when I was 17 and as a result I started looking after my own skin, always applying sunscreen and wearing a hat.I was already using moisturizer.Thank  goodness time has changed that form of thinking. With all the media coverage it amazes me that some parents still ignore our slogan slip slop slap.Breanna even makes her Daddy put sunscreen on.ONE thing I found out yesterday though, remember to check the use by date on your sunscreen. It does go off,we all got a bit pink (not bad)and I was so confused as I am methodic with applying the stuff.I looked  at the use by date and found it to be out of date!!!!!

I know those things are great fun,but too many things can go wrong. Those things can flip pretty easy when using like he was.He did not look very experienced either, not that it makes a great deal of difference accidents happen to the most experienced as well. I just feel this is just an accident waiting to happen.I think when rearing children it is hard enough to keep them safe without inviting danger. Thanks for your comment regards Merle
