A Little Life gone..The Dangers Of 3 Wheeled Strollers/Joggers.

cindyb by cindyb Talking(January 2007) (rank 262nd)

"Where's my baby! Someone's taken my baby!"

These were the anguised words of a close friend of a long time friend of mine as she searched breathlessly for her little 5 month old baby boy. You see, she was just going for a jog, when a call from

a mobile phone caused her to momentarily turn her back, as her little bub slipped quietly into the river, still strapped to his 3 wheeled stroller....

Now I own a three wheeled stroller, it is a good one in terms of structure, with a wide wheel base to hopefully prevent it from flipping. But what I didn't think about is how easily it can move, and how quickly. With smooth suspension and ease of handling, it is as quiet as sitting inside a luxury car, the kind you can't hear the engine running as it cruises along. But with this is a danger. I was walking to the school to pick up my older daughter, and I stopped on the footpath to answer my phone. As I let go to reach into the back compartment, the stroller left my hands and started to roll slowly over the edge of a bump in someones driveway, and would've gone onto the road had I not grabbed it a half second later. I thought I had it on a flat surface, but the front wheel was just poking over an edge, enough to grab it and roll it from me. It happens..

http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/story/0,22606,21036888-2682,00.html

Three wheeled strollers seem to be the latest rage, as we pursue comfort and sporty accessories to maintain a healthly lifestyle. I bought mine so my hubby could take our son for a jog when he is a little older, and myself as I build the energy to get out and about to try and repair the damage to my tummy muscles from my c-section.

Be very careful when out and about with one of these, make use of the safety strap that comes with most good ones, so if your stroller does stray when you are not fully aware ( and let's face it, who doesn't turn their back on their pram/pusher/stroller when you stop to do up a shoe or talk to someone  etc ) at least it is in arms reach. Otherwise, check the surface you are travelling on, if there is a remote chance it could roll, BE ALERT AT ALL TIMES. Use the brake, but dont fully rely on it, as some models have been known not to fully comply with safety standards, or the brake might not have fully engaged, and therefore a little bump disengages them, and they're off. The sheer weight behind the front wheel quickly accelerates the whole thing. And they are SO QUIET!

If you are considering purchasing one, or already have one, don't let the tragedy of another parent losing their precious bundle to wake you up to the reality of the potential risks of these strollers. But like with anything, it is a harsh reminder of the need to be vigilant.  Check out the compliance to safety standards:

www.babystroller.com.au

http://choice.com.au/goArticle.aspx?id=104696

Or just do a Google search.

Not a day goes by when I dont  think about this beautiful couple, who did everything they could to care and nourish for this little one. It was a tragic accident, and as they struggle to accept what has happened, we should not be angry nor find blame. It brings me to tears just writing this, but it also reminds me of how very lucky I am to have my little boy, and how precious life is, and how quickly it can be snatched away.

RIP LEO xx

with love,

Cindy

I feel very sad that this has happened to a family, but I have a 3 wheeler twin pram and it is the best thing I ever got. I never let it go and if I do I always make sure the brake is on properly. It's not really that hard to do things with one hand.

Re: A Little Life gone..The Dangers Of 3 Wheeled Strollers/Joggers.

This is a very sad story, but I have a 3 wheeled stroler and love it, and they arnt reall different to 4 wheeled ones... if you let go they will roll off just the same. I hope this dosnt come out the wrong way but..... why would you turn the other way to answer a phone? Sorry, it just seems strange to me to have to turn around to answer a mobile. I dont think you have to not buy 3 wheelers cause of some things that happen, its kinda like the fact that coffee shops etc cant heat up baby bottles anymore just cause some stupid parent scolded her child with the milk... you check the temp every time you give them ANYTHING! And the fact I couldent borrow a pram at the airport cause some kid got hurt in one. We just have to be careful!

Re: A Little Life gone..The Dangers Of 3 Wheeled Strollers/Joggers.

Whenever we walk to the shops as a family we take the big three seater pram, so that if every one gets tired at the same time they can all sit at the same time, and I've had a hard time getting my husband to understand the importance of NEVER letting go of the pram (I've caught him at it a few times and the fur has flown). Maybe if I show him this he'll finally get it!!

He finally understands why I always get him to firmly hold their hands when we're out walking (he let go once, and Malachi was missing for 20 min!), and why the gates must always be closed (He left them open the last time and Hadassah ran off and almost got skittled!.

I am thje oldest of 11 kids, and these things I learnt from a very young age, and before I met Michael, it honestly didn't occure to me that some people didn't consider it necessary!

I swear, children have nine lives!!!

The 3 wheel buggie we had in New Zealand had a wrist strap that attached between the handle and your wrist.

It could be a little awkward to do things with one hand but the buggie never left you.

Re: A Little Life gone..The Dangers Of 3 Wheeled Strollers/Joggers.

There was also an adapter bar that could be attached to where the front wheel was and relocated the wheel to the end of the bar and add one more to make it a conventional 4 wheeler, this would allow for a second seat to be placed on the fron and still be very stable.

Re: A Little Life gone..The Dangers Of 3 Wheeled Strollers/Joggers.

Hint to help free up both hands if you need to - attach the strap not to your wrist but wear a good strong belt and attach it to that instead. It won't roll any further away and leaves you with both hands free. I often used to walk my dog in the same way, and it wasn't unusual to have the dog strapped to my left side and the pram to my right at the same time.

Re: A Little Life gone..The Dangers Of 3 Wheeled Strollers/Joggers.

I know exactly what dangers a 3 wheeler stroller/pram posess and that is why I refuse to buy one - I use 4 wheeled ones. One day my friend and I decided to go shopping with her son and so we proceeded to catch the bus into Perth City. My friend owned a 3 wheeler stroller and as we were pushing the pram off the bus (the bus hadn't been lowered properly) the front wheel caught under the step of the bus causing the stroller to flip pushing my friend's 3 month old baby into the concrete. While trying to grab the pram as it was flipping my friend then fell forward onto the pram further squishing her son. He had to be taken immediately to PMH Hospital and given cat scans and was kept in to make sure he was alright. Luckily he was unharmed but just think how tragically this event could have gone. It doesn't help when bus drivers don't do a lot to help you either - the bus on that day should have been lowered properly and not even I will catch public transport with my child now because so far I haven't had a bus driver help me on while I'm struggling with a child, a bulky pram, a nappy bag and a handbag. They can be so rude sometimes.

Re: A Little Life gone..The Dangers Of 3 Wheeled Strollers/Joggers.

This is so,so sad and the tradgedy is that it is preventable, heartbreaking. I have had the same three wheel Kinder Wagen for both girls with thankfully no problems. I did witness a near tradgedy a few weeks ago however at an Air Show, this was with a four wheeled pram though, where the Mum took her hands off the pram for a slit second and the wind caught it, and rolled it down the Sea Front Embankment with her newborn inside. Thankfully there were instant reactions from fellow bystanders and they caught it just before it hit the water. I feel so for your friends, as this sort of situation is every Parents worst nightmare. It really highlights the need for us to use the breaks at all times when stationary. I do like the idea of the wrist strap too.

Thankyou for sharing. Winnie.xx

Re: A Little Life gone..The Dangers Of 3 Wheeled Strollers/Joggers.

How very sad, we purchased a 3 wheeler for our last child as we needed a toddler seat. This was ok until our little one was old enough to sit up. The seat does not sit in a fully upright postion so our son spends his entire time trying to sit up. The toddler seat is no longer used as there is not enough room for our little one to sit comfortably. We are very disappointed in this model. They are very large, wider than necessary and as stated really quite dangerous.

It's a real tragedy that a beautiful new life had to be lost for this to be highlighted.

Re: A Little Life gone..The Dangers Of 3 Wheeled Strollers/Joggers.

What a terribly true situation,I don't own one anymore and neither does my sister but her baby son rolled down an embankment when she went to board a bus the baby rolled down under the front of the parked bus lucky for us we noticed as we could grab him before it kept going onto the main road.My pram isnt a 3 wheeler now but they can be just as dangerous....many times my pram brakes havent locked on and my daughter has wheeled down into the playground at school with me just able to catch it....

Im sorry about the little soul passed...great article.

This is so sad to read but excellent safety advice. All the modern day  strollers that i see, seem to be built for comfort and ease for parents, but also come with many more dangers....but in saying that i have also heard of accidents with 4 wheeled strollers.

Cheers Janice

My heart goes out to the parents for their loss.

I don't know what is more astounding, that this can happen at all, or that it actually happened twice - in the same place! After reading your blog I am SO grateful that my bf checked out that my pram has a very strong and secure braking system and a wrist strap that allows me to attach the pram to myself to stop it rolling away if I let go at anytime.

Re: A Little Life gone..The Dangers Of 3 Wheeled Strollers/Joggers.

That is truly tragic!  My heart goes out to all the families who have had similar issues with the 3 wheeler strollers.  Personally, I like the 4 wheelers (need a double here!) and I turn the front wheels completely to the side, and often in opposite directions in order to prevent moving (much like us putting our knees and toes together).  I also make sure when I do stop, I'm facing the pram at all times and I use the top of the sun canopy as a shelf for my bag if I need to get something out.  Means my hands are always on the pram, or my elbows are over the handle.

It isn't just tragedies such as this that are the danger with strollers, the smoother and quieter and easier a pram or stroller is, the easier it is for someone to walk away with your baby without you noticing.

Again, sympathies to the family of the little boy.

I remember reading that story and bursting into tears because the mother had the baby safely strapped into the pram and still the baby was in danger.  It's got me beat how they can still sell them.  I swear by baby carriers that attach to the mother.  On trips to the river I found it best to take the baby capsule out of the car and sitting the baby in that.  It's not on wheels.

3 or 4 wheels, makes no difference

This was such a heartbreaking story. I have a 3 wheeler as my main pram but also a double 4 wheeler and I must say that I dont think it would matter which it was, if it was on a slope both would wheel away. I have always either put the break on or put my foot on the wheel if I stop with my pram(s) There are so many things that "we" all do that we just dont think of the consequences of until something like this happens.

Cheers

3 wheel pram
That was such a tragic loss.  I do have a 3 wheel pram and I have to say I made it a habit of putting the brakes on every time I let go of my pram from the moment I first put my son into it for that very reason.  When I come to a crossing I aways stand back from the road by a meter with both brakes on and my holding the pram.  Also another point is I never take my pram up or down escalators either.  I have had a huge loss myself so I know how precious life is and how depend babies are on us and our choices.  Rest in peace beautiful little Leo.

3 wheeled strollers

I heard about this when it happened, it was on our local news, & it bloody made my heart break. I cried real tears for this young couple, who had so tragically lost their precious baby. All it takes is a split second, & your whole world changes.

Take the ones you love, hold them close, and always cherish the time you have with them. It can take a moment to lose them forever....

My sister has one of the 3 wheeled prams, & she says it IS very easy to move away from you. I personally don't & never have, liked the 3 wheeled sort. I don't think they are safe enough.

Always remember to use the brakes, that's what they are there for.

Have it attached to wrist
A good idea for those stroller, if they move so easily would be to have one of those child wrist rope, the plastic one like they sale so u don't loose ur kids in public place, It looks like a long plastic spring, but it would be attached to stroller handle. So sorry for the lost of that little angel.

That is a wonderfull idea!  I would have never even thought of that.  That would also discourage the rude people in stores who try to step between you and the stroller! Now I have to go find one of these things!!!

Re: Have it attached to wrist

I ahve a steelcraft and it actually came with a strap for jogging. Whilst it frustrsates me that I ahve always got to use the wide aisles at the shops, I find it to be sooooo stable. I used a friends valco one time and it scared me how lite and easy to topple it was, it had a much narrower wheel base.

The steelcraft may be heavier and wider, but I feel it is much safer.

Firstly let me express my condolences to your friend - I felt such anguish when I heard this horror story, I cried then and now.  Your advice is very true, I have always been paranoid about it, and remain ever vigilant with our 3 wheeler.  It doesn't come with a strap, I will get in touch with the manufacturer to see if they have one for the newer model that I can purchase & if not - suggest that they have them as a standard fitting.

Perhaps as parents we should lobby the Australian and New Zealand Safety Standards in regard to straps etc.  Perhaps one day someone will manufacture a stroller that won't roll unless a button is depressed on the handle - i.e. someone is pushing it.  What do you think?  Could be something worth all of us mums getting together to look into so that nobody else has to suffer like this?

Precious cargo
How terrible!! This is a real wake-up call for many parents. I must say I've got a three-wheeler and had my reservations about the safety of them tipping before I bought it but didn't realise this other danger. Mine is pretty strurdy and I know they've come a long way in advacement so i thought mine would be okay. Whenever I stop, if I don't put the brake on it will glide if there is the tiniest incline. Therefore I always put the brake on when stationary, even if I'm holding the handle. I cringe to think of what might've happened had I not. My deepest sympathies for your friend. Hayley

I prefer 4 wheels
We had a 3 wheeler, I didn't like it. Too many times it tipped over. Once it flipped all the way over. I picked it up and bub had a mouth full of grass and luckily nothing more than a few grazes.
He also had to always be strapped in (newborn) otherwise he would slowly slide out.
I soon bought a four wheeler I am finally happy with.
I do not recommend 3 wheelers. I do believe there are a few safe/stable ones made but they are few and far between I would rather go the 4 wheeler.
Sad to hear about Leo. It leaves me very weary of where we put our precious children.

Oh My!
I have had trouble with the same types of examples in this post and the website link.  We used to live on a an Air Force Base.  Not all sidewalks were built with ramps.  I would tip my three-wheeled stroller back and it would tip to the side.  I never thought it could cause a harmful accident or even death.  I will no longer use my stroller but on our walking track at our subdivision...where it is flat and clear of water and other hazards...Thank you so much fo rthis info.

A tragedy no parent should have to live through
My daughter & I were going to the supermarket just before Christmas & a young father was looking in the florist window with his baby sitting in the pram beside him. Suddenly the stroller started rolling backwards down the hill at an angle towards the road. I was to far away to stop the pram, but another couple were walking up in the opposite direction. I yelled, "quick catch the pram, the baby's rolling away..." The couple just kept walking, they didn't attempt to stop the pram at all seemingly indifferent to the baby's fate. The young Dad was in a right state, running after the pram. Thankfully he got to it just as it crashed into a rubbish bin on the side of the road. The couple turned around watching, laughing... I was in shock, they just didn't care at all... Thankfully bubs was ok; Dad was very embarrassed but I'm sure learned a lesson he'll never forget & I'll bet he never lets go of the stroller again. I think it was only a few days later we read about the accident you mentioned & I remembered the near fatal accident we had nearly witnessed. My heart went out to the couple, it's not something any parent should have to live through. The wrist strap is a great idea, which I didn't know came with these prams...

Having heard about the tragedy on the news I have been trying to remember to use the wrist strap. Hopefully soon it will be a habit just like putting on a seatbelt. It was a very sad thing to happen. Hopefully though it will make more people aware of the danger and persuade them to use a wrist strap.
