Marble painting

monarogirl by monarogirl Talking(January 2007) (rank 500+)

A fun activity to do with your kids is marble painting.

You will need:

1. A large tray with sides. We use the cardboard bottom from a slab of dog food cans.(See pic)
2. Several different paint colours in separate small containers.
3. Paper. (obviously)
4. Marbles. I usually have 4 - 6 marbles per colour.
5. An old shirt or art smock. This will get messy!

If you want to put the kids name on the paper, put it on the back BEFORE you begin. It would be way too messy to do this once the paint is on the paper!

Place the paper into the tray blank side up. Put the marbles into the paint containers and roll them around a bit so that the marbles are completely covered in paint.

Now for the messy bit!! Let the kids pick which colours they want to use and place the paint covered marble into the tray. We always put lots of colours in at once but it could also be done one colour at a time.

Pick up the tray and roll it around so that the marbles create patterns on the paper. Don't let the child get too carried away as the marbles can and do jump over the sides of the tray!

The end result looks fantastic and the kids love seeing what patterns they can make. We peg them on the clothes line to dry and they can be used for wrapping paper with a difference.

Very messy but great fun.

great project
i've done this and then put the child's handprint with a light metallic colored paint on top of the dried marbled painting, a little bit off center to the left--the whole print doesn't have to show.  it makes a wonderful present when framed and really captures this time in your child's life.  great article!  thank you.
