Sleepy in the car

matthew by matthew Minti Founder(February 2006) (rank 38th)
Many parents find that a child who is hard to get down to sleep can be easily pacified by a trip around the suburb in the car.  The combination of movement and the sound of the vehicle support the child becoming more comfortable and ready to sleep.  Movement is something
children have gotten used to from the days when humans were a migratory species and children will often enjoy being rocked or walked to get them more sleepy.  As a treehugging greenie I would really recommend a walk around the block rather than a trip in the car - but if you are desparate for sleep to happen then the car can be a treat !

Re: Sleepy in the car
This is something that many parents have been known to resort to... Not me though I am too lazy.  I do prefer the method of walking and it is pretty safe where we live to walk in the early evening hours.  It is good advice to walk whether you are a greenie or not, because if you just had a baby there is no doubt you are a fatty and I am sure that many men put on weight in sympathy too.

Great idea.It is sometimes hard to get children to sleep.Have you seen these cots that rocks the baby to sleep or maybe as part of your routine you could have a walk 20-30 minutes before sleep. But great idea matthew.

Re: Sleepy in the car
Do you mean a cradle? I won't use these.  From the moment I found a baby lying cold, lifeless, inside one of those I swore I'd never use one.  It haunts me to this day and that's probably the main reason I've had Hannah so close to me all the time.  The baby rolled a little in the cradle, which then swung with the motion and knocked the baby into one corner unable to move away and the baby's face was against the wood, the blankets piled up behind, and the baby died.  20 minutes after being put to sleep in the cradle, he was taken from this world.  That was the official ruling, not cot death as we'd all suspected.  It was "accidental suffocation" and it was preventable.  At least if it was cot death it wouldn't have been preventable.  So if it's a cradle you're talking about, or something similar, I would not recommend them.  If you mean those swings you put babies in then transfer them into bed when they're asleep that's fine.

Oh matey that is awful - what a nightmare!  I would never take any risks like that - I am not a fan of anything that has solid walls!  You poor thing, it must have been devastating to find a baby dead.

yes i remember them days, especially with my son who is 9 now, his poor father used to have to drive over 50 kms  a hour in suburban areas or he would scream the car down... Lucky he aint a baby now as the law states that you cant drive over 50kms now in them areas

Good sleepers

My oldest brother and myself were great sleepers, and as soon as you would put us down, we would fall asleep at the appropriate time, but  my other brother who's the middle child, had to be driven around the suburb, and he was a problem a lot of the time to get to sleep.

was this the first article?
wow a piece of history hehe anyways we never had a car for ages when logan was born but found that the movment of the pram either inside or outside alwase worked... with our daughter we got her a boncey chair that vibrates and she basiclly lived in that until recently because she wants to move around more now... we also had alot of help from a baby carrier they are so great cause it keeps bub close and is so easy... none of these options do any damage to the environment either which is a bonus... :)'s

Moving for 9 months

Babies love movement because they've been moving and getting jostled around in the mom's belly for 9 months. In my experience (though I'm sure other pregnant women have experienced too), my son was actually pretty much asleep in my belly for most of the day when I am moving around. As soon as I hit the sack, he wakes up and decides it's play time. It was tough!

One problem with car rides though, is that some babies wake up once you take them out of the carseat.  Nowadays when my son falls asleep in the car on the way home, he wakes up as I am taking him out of the car.  After that it's a whole new toddler becaues he just got his battery charged, though not for long. And then after an hour or so I end up with a cranky tired toddler.

be careful
Be careful not to use this technique too often. I have heard of parents that have to drive around at night at all hours trying to get their children asleep.

Re: be careful
Yes walking is a good idea during the day as at least you get out of the house, not so good at night.

Re: be careful
I totally agree. Driving around in the middle of the night definitely is not a good habit to get into even to stop your baby crying!!!

Is this because you can also put yourself to sleep? ;)
