Toddler Birthday Party Idea - Animal Safari

CTmama by CTmama Speaking(June 2006) (rank 416th)
My son's second birthday was celebrated this past weekend. Both of my kids have summer birthdays so we are big fans of the backyard party.  It turned out GREAT!

The Theme: Animal Safari

Schedule:

11:00 AM - 11:45 Free Play Activities
This time kept the kids
engaged in something while I was able to greet the parents and new kids and set up food.
  • Face painting - we hired a couple of 12 year olds to paint kids faces like lions, tigers, etc.
  • Coloring - I found coloring pages online of animals.
  • Decorate a visor - _ bought 12 foam visors (less than $1 US each) and a bucket of foam animal stickers. The kids decorated their visors with lions, tigers, etc.
  • Decorate a bag - I bought plain white bags with handles (more on this later) and the kids wrote their names/put stickers on them.
11:45 - 12:00 Wild Animal Safari
We bought a bucket of plastic animals and threw them around the yard. My husband wore a safari hat and led the kids around the house to look for wild animals. They carried their hand decorated bags and collected the animals.

12:00 - 12:30 Lunch
I made sandwiches the night before and used animal shaped cookie cutters to cut them out.
The kids also had "jungle juice"

12:30 - 12:45 Cupcakes
I made a tray of lion cupcakes in ice cream cones. Recipe to follow.

12:45 - 1:00ish
Parents pick up, goodie bags, etc.

My son was turning two so we didn't open presents in front of the kids.

Decorations:
  • Two shades of green streamers hung vertically in doorways to look like jungle vines.
  • I bought jungle theme plates but saved money by buying plain but matching cups, napkins, etc.
It was a big hit with the kids and the parents. The weather cooperated, which was nice. I highly recommend this theme for little ones! They really enjoyed it in my house!

I loved the cupcake idea, they look great and love the cones. I will have to try it. Surely it is easier for the kids to eat and we can take the paper off so they don't try to eat them..

Great Work!

great theme
It does make life easier to have a theme to work to.  Most if not all games are eaily adaptable also.  Sounds like you had a great time!  I bet the memories will bring you smiles for many many years to come.
Peace

I call this practicing for Easter
I love the search and find activity and the fact that you have it scheduled for a realistic 15 minutes.
We do this with my 19 month old in the backyard on a regular basis.  I have a gift bag with handles that he uses as his basket. I take lemons from our tree and throw them around the yard, and then guide him toward finding them, bringing them to me, and finally putting them in the bag.  While he's looking for the next one, I take the lemon he just put in the bag and toss it elsewhere.  He is very into finding things that are hiding, so this is a great activity.

Loce the cupcakes!

Maybe for the third birthday party! We have done birthday #2 and that was fairly low key, but I like your ideas and perhaps we'll use some next year. Thanks.
