Connecting with Your Kids: The Power of the Special Plate

TheMentorMom by TheMentorMom Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 2nd)
As a parent, I am always looking for ways to encourage positive relationships within our family, particularly between the kids.  I've discussed sibling bickering and rivalry in other articles.  Needless to say, constant bickering between the kids can be a big energy drainer.  I want to share a little
activity that we have been doing for several months called "the special plate."  I had read about it in a parenting magazine several years back and thought I'd give it a try.  The best thing, it is so easy and inexpensive to do!  Here are the ingredients:
  • Eat dinner together at the table.
  • A special plate.
That's it!  Now, the "special plate" is special because it is different.  Some parents have used a different place setting, others made an activity of it with the kids going to the local plate painting store and making it an event, others (like me) found an inexpensive plate at a local store.  I actually found a red plate with hearts at Target in the dollar bin!

When mealtime comes, one family member gets the special plate.  Before the meal starts, everyone at the table has to say something that they love about that person or something that makes them special.  Sometimes we identify something that the member has done that day that was kind or giving.  This activity build cohesiveness as a family and helps build self-esteem.  It also makes each family member think about the positives in other family members rather than focusing on the negatives (e.g., "she always messes with my toys!").  I have noticed that when we do this regularly, the kids seem to get along better.  As a matter of fact, we all seem to get along better!

I hope that some of you give this a try.  I know it has really been for my family!  If you do try it or have a similar activity, post what works for you!

Special Plate
Glad you like the idea!  It sure sets a nice tone for the meal.  There's nothing worse than bickering at dinner time.  When we use the special plate, everyone is nicer to each other :)

Cool thought

Love this idea but alas master 5 is very jeolous if he is not the centrre of attention....He would tease my daughter if he got the plate and it would cause untold animosity if he didnt get it and someone else did..,.

We would have serious meltdowns....,hopefully we can try and use this when he learns to share the limelight with others......,

Such a lovely idea
I'm going to share this with my daughter as the way you have described it is EXCELLENT.

My grandmother used to have a variety of different really beautiful cups & saucers & she used to let me pick my favorite one to use when I visited. I thought that was pretty special but this takes that type of idea a few steps further. My grandkids have a few different children's plates here that I let them choose their favorites, like Thomas or Dora, but I really do like this idea...  I'm going to try it - Guess we better go out & look for that extra special award winning style that both kids will love... THANKS so much for sharing

love this!
my sister-in-law went to one of those pottery places and painted this kind of plate for our family.  she painted words like caring, fun, smart, playful, wise, needed, etc. all along the perimeter of the plate.  whoever gets the special plate can choose the word they most need feedback about--for example, i really would love to know the ways i am wise in our family.  and then everyone supplies their answer.  i'm sorry to say we have only used this on special occasions, but i LOVE the idea of making the special plate a regular occurrence.

great article, mentormom!  your advice always rocks!
