FIRE... could a simple escape plan save their lives????

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 3rd)
The smoke detector goes off in the middle of the night...... You get up and there is smoke all around.....you run franticlly through your home  making sure all your kids are out and safe...... You find one of your children screaming in a corner.... not knowing what to do...... You
grab them and run out of the house as you stand out side and watch you house burn down to the ground..... It is all good but only because your most irreplaceable things are standing beside you..... What have you taught your kids to do in a fire and what safety things do you have in you home???

I remember last year Michaela an Tiana yelling FIRE FIRE as John stood in the backyard watching a tree burn just frozen not knowing what to do....... Aidan went straight into emergency mode grabbed the fire extinguiser from my kitchen and immediately extinguished the fire...... After calming John from what seemed like some sort of shock..... we got to the bottom of what had happened......He was playing with a lighter near one of my bottle brush trees..... one of his clever mates had showed him how to make a huge flame if you use a spray can and light it.... EXCELLENT I thought how many times have I told this boy about the dangers of fire?? The answer is heaps!!!

My husband is a fire fighter and we have tried to teach our children as much respect about fire we can and tried to teach them about the dangers and how quickly fire can change its mind and how unforgiving it is.....

These are a few things we do in our home to try to be safe from this beautiful yet dangerous and unforgiving beast..... FIRE

Do you have smoke detectors....... All homes should have them.... Keep the batteries up if they are battery operated or you can have the ones that are hard wired.....

Do you have a fire extinguisher.... you should have one in your kitchen..... or a fire blanket to put out any unexpected fat fires etc....

Most importantly do you have a fire drill.... You do them at work and at school but do you do them at home.... what do you have in place if the need arises.... Sure you can tell your kids this is what you do in a fire etc..... but have you had an actual drill....

We have a two story place with trees and water tanks near the outside verandah so those are our methods of leavinh the upstairs floor... the downstairs floor has sliding doors that lead onto the verandah so those are the exits down there......

We have an actual plan of action if a fire occured in our home but do you????

But most importantly have a drill in the day during the night with the lights off and on..... Plan exits.... organise a meeting place.... have a few practice runs......You might think it is a bit much but when you are trying to protect your most valuable things in your life is it???

Most of all plan ahead..... if it never happens then what can it hurt but if it does happen isn't it better to be prepared??

Please check out the simple link I have added to this advice......

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Very Informative!!!
Thanks for this great advice. Amazing what you said about the kids watching the fire stunned. I had a similar experience as a little girl. My brother was playing with matches and started a fire in the brush of our back paddock. There were houses all around so I panicked and ran inside to tell my dad. it was early morning so he was still in bed. He ran out and stamped the fire out with his bare feet. He was furious!! Since then I've had your fascination with fire, but I fear it too. I'll definitely be using your advice!!  I didn't realise how quickly  fire  can spread  and it seems an exit plan is vital! Thankyou, Hayley xx

Fire safety
Hi
Tell the truth you just love to see a man in uniform...or should i say out of it......
There is also a paint you can buy to paint the skirting boards that is visible at night in the dark...the darker it is the more it shows up.....
Think I might take your idea and implement it with the kids.......do them good to be rudely awakened in the middle of the night....payback heheehehehehe
I remember when the kids were little and we visited the firestation   wonder if they are still as cute hehehehehehe....

ill add this to our ruiteen
both my partner and i have suffered house fires when we were little so are vigilant at checking the smoke alarms. i always change the battery when daylight saving time starts. but now we will be adding a escape plan to the routine if the alarm sounds then get out safely will be the new rule. we should be able to practice a few different scenarios. smoke alarms are easy to fit and available from almost everywhere but not everyone knows the best places for them to be fitted and how many their home requires so please seek professional advise. i just used Google to find this press release from last year it also has a tool free number on it well worth reading.www.planning.nsw.gov.au/mediarelplan/fs20060314_320.html

That is a great thought mate...... Do people really know where to put smoke alarms....... A friend of mine told me that you should have one in your roof cavity as well because fires can start there which to me was a pretty sensible thing...... A fire in our home is something that we can not definately avoid but putting all the measures in place to avoid and protect from it are an excellent idea in my eyes......

Great Advice
We rent our house, and new regulations have come in that our fire alarms have to be checked by the realestate I think its every 6 months, but do home owners check theirs, so important.  My dh lit a fire under his house when he was little and his mother after putting the fire out lol marched him down to the fire station told them what happened and he got a very long talk from them on what fire does and how dangerous it is, he says its the best and only thing his mum could of ever done for him, he never lit another fire

Great advice

Great advice. A fire is something most of us would never experience but for those who do, it is often serious when the family has no plan.

Interestingly enough, I saw a program on TV that shows some kids do not even wake up even with a blaring smoke detector. I think this makes it even more important to practice fire drills so that the children gets used to what the smoke detector sounds like and that it means immediate danger.

Great advice
Kids when taught the fire drill at school follow it and know where to go and what to do etc..... Our thoughts are if they know to do this at school then why not try to teach them this at home...... thanks for your comment Izzy

a plan is always good to have

This is great advice Angie.....and its something so many do not consider...

A few days back a local woman died in a house fire. Neighbours managed to save the husband sadly couldn't save her. They'd only been in her new home for a few months too..

I have extinguishers in my house, except I'm also an idiot and forget that I own them. That's why they need to be placed somewhere visible at all times - other wise...out of sight out of mind. Which is what happened to me.

Years ago I had a friend stay the night, we got up early the next day and were having coffee and talk when I began to smell this revolting smell....I followed it into the bedroom where they bed was on fire. She had left the electric blanket on and it just caught the mattress on fire. Very toxic I might add. I did everything to put it out and after some time did just that.

Later that day we were driving to the shopping centre when I realized that I owned a fire extinguisher....wish I had have remembered sooner though, like when I needed it....lol

We did laugh over it...but in all honesty it could have been so much more serious....

Again this was a Great Article

Great atricle

I really need to get a fire extinguisher for our house I will hopefully be able to afford it this week. When I was very small our house burnt down and we lost all of our possesions but nobody was hurt and that was the main thing.

Everybody should think of these things. Thanks for the reminder angie
