Eating healthy

lexiw by lexiw Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 15th)

I hear and see so many children who are not fed healthy diets. I know in our house it is absolutely essential as a lot of good foods help to keep my chronic ITP childs platelet levels up so that hopefully she does not have to go back on to

prednisilone (steroids).

I find that it is not often that we have colds or flus in our house and I believe that it is because of the good fresh healthy foods that we eat. Food is so important for us to live our lives to the best of our abilities and to do this as naturally as possible I think is the best way.

I have been told by people that they can not afford to eat healthy and I know that it is shocking the prices of healthy foods compared to that of junk foods but I have found that we save money on doctors bills and medications by eating healthy so we can afford to spend that bit extra. I really dislike seeing young children who are over weight sitting at either macdonalds or KFC pigging out and never smiling. Have any of you noticed this? Over weight children are in general not happy children and usually their parents are overweight too and never excersise or really try to be a good role model where their weight is concerned.

Now don't get me wrong I know that there are a lot of over weight people out there who do eat healthy and try to excersise the best they can, These are not the people I am talking about as these people do want healthy children and to be healthly themselves. The people I am reffering to are people who are lazy or people who find it easier to give into their children rather than teach them the healthy choices.

We as parents are meant to love, protect and keep our children as healthy and safe as possible and I think there are a few who need to be reminded of what they should be teaching our young.

Re: Eating healthy

Fruit and veges are a must to be eaten.

All the cakes, biscuits and other tasty treats are nice to eat but not so good for the health.

In our house the fruit and veges are always available as there is not packets of biscuits, cakes etc sitting in the pantry. If the unealthy type foods are there as a choice they will usually be eaten. Dont buy these types of food if possible. Once in a while as a treat but not on a daily/weekly basis. It is a bit of a hardline approach but our children have been brought up on fruit as snacks and dont ask for sweets as there arnt any in the house as a general rule.

The parents are advised by the school as to what is acceptable to be in a lunchbox. We dont have a problem with this but some parents believe it is their right to put whatever they like in the lunchbox. The problem there is that they are having an influence on other children as well as their own by including chocolate bars and such for their children to eat in front of others.

Re: Eating healthy

Hey Lexi ; )

I like your advice, and I agree we need to give our kids (and ourselves) a healthy balanced diet and regular excercise to be on top of our game, and life in general.  We only tend to get fast food if we are on long trips and it is late at night... That being said, I will still only have a McCafe cappucino to tide me over.  When I go through to use the loos, in fast food restaurants (there has to be some use to their buildings), I am always shocked at the prices.  Healthy fruit, vegetables and the basics you need to make a good meal, like pasta, rice, noodles aren't really expensive. If you have room in your freezer and shop at the right time of night, or right day of the week, you can also get bargains with your meat products.

I don't think price is an excuse not to give your kids healthy food, and special treats like the odd lollie etc. should remain just that 'special'.  When in season and affordable, nothing is sweeter and nicer than a juicy strawberry anyway, and the best treat is a frozen fruit kebab, with all different chunks of fruit on it... Much better than some chemical filled commercial thing at the store.

FOOD FOOD FOOD
I actually cringe each time we go shopping, the town we are living in is a coastal town that grows so much of the states fresh produce yet the cost of said produce is ridiculess......I am trying to talk my husband into moving,we were paying less in Mt Isa for the same items go figure.I don't understand why fresh food has to be more expensive than processed ones, the government complains about the overall obesity problem in Australia yet there are no feasible plans that I have heard of to help rectify the problem of over priced fresh food!!!!!  I try buying the seconds for cheaper but get them home and they are inedible. It is a continual battle to afford and eat healthily,I really am at my whits end with the overall cost of living as I am sure are a lot of people. No wonder people choose the easier option........Thanks Lexi for another top article, you go girl

That is us
We actually do eat healthily, but we dont eat all fresh fruit and veg always simply because sometimes it is too expensive for our budget, so we find other ways to compensate, or we cut down on other foodstuffs so that we can spend more on the fresh things.  It is about finding a balanced, hopefully varied, diet and enjoying it.

Great Article lexiw.  You sure know what you talking about.
Peace

eating healthy
It is so important to eat healthy and unfortunately it has become much more work to be healthy nowadays. Foods are packed with more calories, fat, and cholasterol in such a small portion that we've already met our daily quoata in just a few bites. Unfortunately, our stomach has not been reprogrammed to feel full with such a small amount, and so we eat to our stomach's fill (and sometimes more) with double - triple the amount of calories.
