Say No to Soda

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(January 2007) (rank 12th)
Today's first time parenting tip - Don't give your infant soda for the first two years of their life

This tip seems pretty obvious to me, and hopefully to a lot of other parents. But I saw someone driving with their infant, couldn't have been more than a year
old, and they were sucking down a bottle of Faygo orange pop in the rear-facing baby seat of their old Toyota Camry.

Call me a stickler, but I think you should teach a child how to eat right before they learn to eat wrong. And sugary, caffeinated and carbonated drinks don't figure into that mix.

The nutritional value is nil. The effects of being addicted to caffeine are real. And the weight gain throughout their childhood years can be real too.

The best way to make it easy to say no to soda? Lead by example. Don't drink it in front of your kids, and don't keep it in the house. The less access they have to it and the less they see you, the number one person they learn from drinking it, the better.

Providing lots of healthy alternatives like juice, water, milk, etc. is key too. A cold soda every now and again is fine, you don't have to be a warden, but be reasonable. And if their too young to remember kicking back a cold coke with their dad on a hot summer's day, then there's really not point in giving it to them.

Being an example
Since we had kids our diet has improved heaps as I can't preach to them and then counteract it by actions.  That said, I am not a food nazi and let my kids have 'treats' occasionally.  We talk in terms of every day and not every day food.  I have friends that will not let their kids have any junk and their babies had only water and breastmilk for the first two years of their lives.  fair enough for them, but please don't judge me if I let my son have watered down fruit juice sometimes!  It's all a question of your own judgement and deciding what is right for your kids within healthy guidelines!

PS My son loves water and I have no problems with buying him bottled water when we are out (which my parents would never do) - rather that than fizz!

soda is so not healthy

I have two daughters, 12 and 14 and i never buy soda at the groceries for the families. My husband will sometimes and it makes me mad. I raise them not to drink any, i always by water bottles and they are crazy about that so the case of pop will last forever. Thank god. In one can of soda there is 10 spoon of sugar. I know one guy that as been drinking pepsi since childhood and now 37. He drinks it in morning to night about 10 cans a day. Now he has no more tastebuds, his teeth are black and discusting and he can not even burp anymore. His stomach is burnt by it. He still drinks it is addict to it. No thank u.

No Fizzy
My kids all went hyper on fizzy particularly my daughter was physically over active and my youngest with the ADHD
I don't allow them fizzy, they actually love drinking water!
I do have plenty of cola in the house tho as I am an cocacoladdict (but don't tell my kids!!!)

say no to soda

I agree. Not only is soda bad for children, who wants to deal with the tantrum that surely follows when they finish the soda and want more? Does a parent just let the child cry (we can only hope), or give in and give the child more soda?   I for one dealt with the tantrum the first time I introduced watered down juice and stopped right then and there. I just stuck to water and milk for my son.

No fizzy
My partner made the mistake of giving Zac some coke when he was around 2 it was only a mouthful and he didn't sleep for ages, it is not worth it you can find a water fountain in most places to give your child a drink they do not need all that sugar or caffine.

I think the best drink to give your child is water and is also the best drink to give ourselves.
We don't buy soft drink often. Occassionally we will have some at dinner when we go out. If they have too much fizzy they get a lil crazy! There is just way to much sugar in it i reckon. And as you say not much nutritional value.
I am not impressed in seeing ababy with a bottle of coke and packet of chips. Doesn't seem right to me.

Yeah, it just blew my mind to see a one year old sucking away at a 20oz'er. Liked your article on teeth. Added it to the related advice.
