The symptoms of cows milk allergy in you and your children

Anonymous Author (January 2007)
When is the best time to introduce cow's milk into your child's diet.
  • Early introduction of cow's milk increases the chances that the baby will develop diabetes later in life, especially with a family history of the disease.
  •  the consumption of cow's milk puts the baby at risk for anemia.
  • Allergies and eczema are more prevalent in children switched to cow's milk before their first birthday.
  • Cow's milk isn't as nutrient rich as formula
Doctors say to wait till you child gets to at least 12 months as before this their bodies cant digest it .....2.5% of our babies will have an allergy to milk  though Around 80% of infants will grow out of their allergy by the age of 3 years.

My son was 2mths when i was told to give him food and cows milk.....He was a very big eater and was never satisfied...If i knew now what i didn't know then..... My daughter was 4 mths when again i was told to go to milk and food..... This time i did the food only...i drank big quantities of milk while pregnant...Not good to do if you have a high allergy family i have since found out...........

My two children have both been special as they both couldn't handle their milk...... My 5 yr old was put into hospital at 14 mths of age after his kidneys started to fail and he was dehydrated......... He hadn't been able to handle his formula and so my doctor had put him onto a hypo-allergenic formula (that smelt really bad).l... He was still having a hard time with food and milk especially t 12 mths so they sent us to a allergy clinic.... My baby was taken off all food and drink and allowed a strict diet of cabbage, pears, boiled chicken, potatoe, chokoe and water...... He was that hungry he started to drink and was getting thru 3 to 4 ltrs a day of water..... They had him in hospital but we had to go on to a bigger children's hospital as they said he would need dialysis.....and more tests.....Somehow my baby got better and even the drs were amazed...(his body was shutting down)..... now he is back to great but we still have to watch his diet etc.....and he only likes to drink long life milk now.....

My now 2 yr old daughter also has a prob with dairy........we tried lactose free but her problem is the protein in the milk..... I could have her on a special formula but i got so sick of having to make up the smelly stuff that she is on rice milk and is watched to make sure she is healthy.....Both my kids are in the small 15 % who cant have soy due to allergy either....Every time i try to bring milk into miss 2's diet she is ill within the next 30 min's......so my doc says just don't try anymore......

Allergic reactions after having cow's milk or other dairy products
These symptoms may occur:

  1.  up to one hour after having cow's milk.
hives, eczema, face swelling, vomiting, diarrhoea, noisy breathing or wheeze. Severe reactions may cause floppiness in babies and a serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis.

  2. several hours after having moderate amounts of cow's milk.
vomiting and diarrhoea and sometimes blotchy rashes or worsening eczema.

  3. after a day or up to several days after having normal amounts of cow's milk.
     eczema, vomiting, diarrhoea or asthma.
you also might find your child has daily evidence of this problem,,,,,
  • dark blue, black or reddish circles under the eyes
  • reddish earlobes
  • reddened nose (from rubbing the tip due to itch)

Lactose intolerance......80% of the population suffers from this without even knowing they do..... symptoms are diarrhoea, vomiting, bloating, cramping stomach pain and gas

Please really be careful about what you give your children as it can be dangerous if their body cant digest it and if you have any concerns get to your doctor.....

Milk...
It doesn't always to a body good.  My 3 younger boys and myself have milk allergies (and they're adopted, weird, huh?).  Very informative article.

Thanks for the tips
Thanks for the information - my husband is allergic to milk so I held off giving it to my son, but did give him cheese and yoghurt.  When my son was 18 months old I discovered he was lactose intolerant (not allergic!).  He was a small baby and had growth issues, multiple SMELLY nappies a day and other issues that I kept being told were normal!!  I finally had enough and had him allergy tested - this turned up no allergies (thank God!) but they suggested taking wheat and dairy out of his diet.  Within a week he was a different child.  Now (at 3) he can have dairy OK and my daughter has not had the same issues. However I wish someone had told me earlier what to look for!!!  Thanks for sharing this so other kids don't suffer.

FYI - I didn't give him cow's milk (he was breastfed) but I gather there is lactose in breastmilk.  If I had known earlier I gather I could have changed my diet to lower it.  When we found out (at 18 mths) I put him on rice milk and then lactose free milk later (he didn't like the taste of soy milk)

My Daughter

Had to have 50/50 cows milk and water from when she was 3 months old it was try that or put her on a drip in hospital. She took to it easily after trying everything else this was all she would drink and she has had no problemswith allergies or anything else like that because of the milk. Sometimes it is a necassary thing and I am glad that she hasn't had any problems because of it.

However I think this is a good article and parents should always consult a professional when thinking about introducing cows milk to a child.
