easy ways to get kids to take there medicine!!

franni by franni Crawling(January 2007) (rank 342nd)
hi there.
my 17 month old is really fussy when she is sick and dosent like taking her medicine,
so me and my partner have come up with a few idea that might be able to help you as it helped us.

we found these dummys that you
can put the medicine in and they suck the medicine right down.
i thought at first this dosent sound quite right and was a bit werry about this idea, but it seemed to work for her.

theres the cheek pocket method, where you pull back one check and deposit the medicine(only little bits at a time)
it runs down the side of the mouth so the child cant spit it out, it advoids most of the tounge so bubs dont taste it much.
i found this way much easier then the dropper, she would always pull it off me.

also there is this long cantainer about the size of a  spoon , it has a spoon on the end of it  and i  place up the top where you can put the amount of medicine in
that you need, it kinda looks like a crocodile spoon, we found this much easier to she just suckes the medicine out. im not sure where to get them from because my sister gave me this one.

if bubs dosent keeps being sick from the medicines, you could try givinger her a luke warm bath to bring down the fever.
have you tried rectal suppositories, i havent as of yet but there aparently good a friend of mine told me about them.
aparently you can get chewable medicins for children, i havent been able to find them yet.

flavoring
Many pharmacies will also add flavoring to prescription meds - they have different flavors available - so if you find one your child likes you can stick to it.

Good ideas
I have a chronic medicine hater!  In fact I would rather avoid this issue altogether he is so bad.

We try disguising his medicine/panadol in things - juice, milk etc...  I found Milo worked well - dissolve a little in hot water then add heaps of milk.  Mind you my son is three & I wouldn't do this to a younger child.  He can sometimes taste it anyway & the only other tips the chemist could give me is to refrigerate the medicine as this lessens the flavour and to try different brands of painkillers as some have different flavours.

Will see if I can find some of these devices you mention!

Good ideas
My son 20 months and is exactly the same. I tried all the tricks and flavours. FINALLY found one that he likes and its Dymadon Baby. The other trick I used for him was to make him a lime milkshake and just put his meds in there. He especially hates this emoxacillan hes on at the moment. He wont take it unless I trick him.

easy way to take meds
my 11mth old girl has a heart condition and takes a lot of meds. the best way 4 her is to put the dummy or the bottle in her mouth and syringe little bits of med into the corner of her mouth while sucking. she hardly even knows!
