Dehydration

lexiw by lexiw Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 15th)

I was reminded today how important drinking water is.

My eldest got a bad tummy bug and was vomiting all night, There was no temperature and no other sign of illness except for vomiting which was so bad that she couldn't even keep water down. From my own experiences with vomiting because of anorexia I know that the most important thing is to keep up the fluids so here are some suggestions for getting fluids in.

1) Sipping water every 10 to 15 minutes whether it stays down or not.

2) Icy poles are a great fun way to get fluids into a young child.

3) spooning or syringing water into a small baby if they won't drink from a bottle

4) There are drinks and icypoles that you can buy from chemists to help with dehydration but I have found that not one child I have given them to has liked the taste.

I hope this helps someone. It has helped me alot.

Great advice
Thanks Lexi, this is excellent advice and so current. There's a lot of bugs going around at the moment and this hot weather isn't helping much. This will help many mums to help hydrate their babies. Though, I hope that anyone whose bub shows strong signs of dehydraton gets them to the hospital. If bub is lethargic and hasn't been able to keep any fluids in it's life threatening. Your tips can hopefully avoid that situation. Thanks for this great advice. Hayley xxx

fluids
Your right Lexi,I think this will help a lot of scared Mums.......it is pretty scary. One thing I would like to add is that breast milk for bubs(if you are feeding this way)is really good for them it actually helps them if they still want to feed........Poor Breanna was 4 months old when people traveling through the property stopped for a day, they had gastro and were going both ends.....She contracted the bug and was so ill luckily she still fed from me,It was so scary as I was so far away from medical help.I was so angry the people stayed knowing how contagious the bug was.The flying doctors recommended to keep feeding her saying it contained important nutrients that would still be absorbed even though she was expelling from both ends.In these situations any thing you can do to relieve your children is a god send

great advice
Water is so so important, and the same methods can be used on hot days etc when people are too busy.  If I want E to drink more I will give her a half cup only.  Then she will ask for more because she feels cheated that she didnt get a full drink, so she ends up having four or five half cups.  lol.  So sneaky.  Sounds much worse written down than i realised.  mwahahahaa.

Having sips often is awesome when feeling unwell as they will stay down and it is surprising how soon one candrink normally again once they are slightly rehydrated.  If you cannot take sips have a medicine pot that you fill with water.  I tend to set the alarm every 5 mins to remind me when I am unwell in case I doze off and miss a sip.  It does make a lot of difference.

Alternatively I will use a straw in a pint glass and as i am able to tolerate more I can really 'pig out', but that is best for those who know what they are doing and can be sure they will not bring it back up again.  E loves graduating to the straw stage.

Again, great advice lexi
Peace
