What you need to know: Pre-pregnancy

rachelcook by rachelcook Minti Founder(February 2006) (rank 28th)
Planning to get pregnant.
See your GP and get the necessary tests done. Your GP will check to see if you are immune to Rubella (blood test). Your GP will also check that you are not anaemic.

Also your GP will take a pap smear (this is to make sure you don't have to have any abnormal cells that may need to be removed prior to conceiving) which will delay you for up to three months before you can get pregnant. From my experience, make sure you ask for the 'thin prep' test, as it is more conclusive than the regular test. (I had been only getting the regular tests every two years and just by chance asked for the 'thin prep' test, from which I then had to have a 'colposcopy' test to have a closer test done and then a 'Cone Biospsy', which involves Day Surgery, and the result delayed us getting pregnant for three months.)

Health assessment
Make sure you aren't smoking at all. Discuss any medical issues with your GP. I stopped drinking coffee and alcohol opting for more healthier alternatives such as Chai Tea and herbal teas. Take folate tablets daily up to 3 months before conceiving. Try and be in your normal weight range for your age prior to getting pregnant and adopt a healthy exercise regime (it doesn't have to be instense, walking everyday is good enough). All this is designed to give yourself better chances of conceiving and delivering a really health baby.

Getting the pre-natal care you want
Ask friends or family friends with kids to refer you to a good midwife/obstetrician. Find out what type of birth you feel comfortable with, but my advice is to not get too fixed on this, I believe your only goal should be delivering safely. I have had friends really dead set on say a "home birth", but to be devasted when that didn't occur and they had to have a c-section instead. It triggered mild post natal depression for one friend of mine. So my advice would be to keep your options open, focus on a healthy delivery 'outcome', not necessarily on the 'how' the delivery must. Yes, work out your wishes but be prepared to let go of some if it is endangering your baby.

Last but not least, relax! I had massages! I wanted to de-stress from my instense business life and I really had no idea just how stressed I was. It helped to put me in a better state of mind. Find something that works for you to relax you.

I am trying to have a baby, but as my husband has the low count I am trying to absorb as much information as I can before hand.

Thanks for the advice.

I didn't know about Rubella. Does anyone know about the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) shot and if that qualifies immunity?

Re: Thanks for the advice.
Here's more info on the MMR vaccine. It does appear to qualify immunity, a good idea is also to check this out with your peditrican or doctor.
