Hand Washing

exquisite-flower by exquisite-flower Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 9th)

Hand washing is an important skill to teach your child.

This is a brief overview but more information can easily be found on the link at the bottom.

There are many reasons to do this properly not least proper hygiene and good health.  Especially as

children grow older they pick up different germs on their hands, but by learning these simple habits at a young age they will become habits for life and hopefully mean less episodes of sickness.

There are several times throughout a family day when it is good to wash your hands:

  • before meals, after meals,
  • "Toilet, hands, face and teeth" routine
  • When coming inside from playing,
  • After getting messy hands with gluing/painting,
  • Before and during cooking/baking,
  • After playing with animals,
  • After changing/handling nappies.

Technique:
The most effective way to cleanse your hands is to wash them in soap and water and to rub them all over including between each finger.  There are various different soaps on the market and each has advantages and disadvantages to them as wih all things, but the simplest most effective method is simple soap and water, so when you are in the shops looking at all the varieties just remember that generally at the end of the day it does not matter.

Anti-bacterial hand soaps
Anti-microbial hand soaps
Soap and water
Alco gel/foam type cleansers

Hand drying:
The only thing to remember is to dry them thoroughly.  If they are left slightly damp they may over a period of time get chapped and/or broken which is very painful and can potentially lead to health problems, with this in mind it is also good to use hand lotion when hands appear to be getting dry.

This so far is about hand washing in the home.  In hospitals and places where adults/children are being cared for it is important to use anti-bacterial hand washes to protect yourself, prevent passing what may be a harmful virus from one person to another and to always wear gloves for self-protection.

The best way to teach a child is by example - so check your personal habits.  Do you wash your hands regularly?  Do you often forget?  What about other people who play a major role in your lives or care for your children?  Without becoming obsessive are there times when you should wash your hands simply to encourage them.

One statistic that continues to amaze (and horrify) me is the one regarding peanuts in a bar/pub.  ugh!  What a disgusting breeding ground for the germs from peoples unwashed hands.  A lot of this is widely known as "common sense".

The best advice I can offer for hand washing is to keep it simple.
It really is as easy as that.

Peace

Re: Hand Washing

This is very important to teach kids, especially when the little ones especially if they are in school, since they could be bringing home all sorts of germs.

I was reading a parenting magazine the other day and saw a hand soap for children that makes their hands blue. And the point is that the hand is not probably washed until all the blue is gone. I've been meaning to track it down, but haven't had the time.

"Boys will be boys"  lol.... much better you repeatedly remind them then they suffer some adverse reaction to something they ingest.

Re: Hand Washing
I was driving around this afternoon to get Soph to sleep and I happened to catch "Off the page" on Radio 4 - it was definitely a case of "boys will be boys" according to the GP Phil Hammond! Perhaps they could be made to listen to the programme? Or not - they may think "well, if doctors are like that...."! It was called "Now wash your hands" and is on Listen Again for the next 7 days, in case you're interested.

Re: Hand Washing

DD1 goes through hand-washing-resistant phases which drive me mad!

But I heard on the news today that there is a big sickness bug going around the UK and so I reminded her to be extra good at washing her hands when she goes back to school and gave the gory details about what would probably happen if not, and when one of us has a cold I also give her the lecture about being extra good at washing. I can only hope she pays attention - once they get to school you cant stand over them and you just know that rushing out to play is more interesting than hand washing.

Re: Hand Washing

Persistence always pays off.  Good on you.  We were watching 'Home and Away' this week and a litle girl was hit by a car.  It was terribly tragic.  She is alive, but very hurt and in hospital.  Thankfully E was out of the room at the time of the accident being shown, but we have had a big talk about road safety off the back of that.  When they can apply things to their lives and their experience they are more likely to do.

Keep at it and I truly hope she doesnt come down with anything from school

Re: Hand Washing

Thank you, and Well done!

That is fantastic that your daughter does it well.  I was inspired to do this article by two teenage girls I knew just over a year ago who never washed their hands and then wondered why they had so many tummy problems...

hygiene is something that a few parents seem to forget to teach their kids....well full hygiene anyway.
I always make emily wash her hands even if they aren't dirty. Germs come from so many strange places.

Re: Hand Washing

Well done.  Emily is lucky to have such a great teacher.

The importance of hand washing and its relation to general good health and hygiene cannot be stressed too much!  My daughter loves to stand and play - that is the advantage for her of handwashing.
