Children with bruises 2

lexiw by lexiw Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 10th)

I have written an article on this but I don't think it said enough so here is our story maybe this will help. This will be in a few parts as our story is pretty long.

When I had my first child she was jaundice and very thin and always

had colds and flus for the first six months of her life so when I had my second child and she was chubby and so healthy I was extremely happy and I enjoyed the first six months of bliss with her. Unfortunately this wasn't going to last though.

At six months old I noticed what appeared to me to be tiny little blood blisters in the corners of Brielles eyes and in the joints of here elbows. I didn't think this was right at all so I took her to our dacotor who was on holidays so we had to see another docor. She was great and checked Brielle over thourghly and took blood and refferred us to a peadatrician. She said it was possible that Brielle had luekemia. I had so many people afterwards say to me that the doctor shouldn't have said that to me but I am glad she did it prepared me for the worst.

I went home and held my baby and cried and cried all I could think of was my baby dieing. The girls father didn't have the same reaction but that is a different matter all together. It is enough to say that he had nothing to do with Brielles illness at all ever. I phoned my parents who drove over 500km to come and get us and take us to the peadatrician.

The peadatrician also took blood and did other tests. He diagnosed ITP almost immediately. I was told Idiopathic Thrombocytopeanic Purpura is a blood disorder where the bone marrow does not produce the platelets that the blood needs to be able to clot properly or something was destroying the platelets as soon as they were produced.

At this point my head was spinning I had no idea what was going to happen and I was very frightened about what was going to happen to my child. The peadiatrcian then referred us to a heamotologist who became Brielles regular doctor. He also did blood tests which at the time I thought when are they going to stop taking all this blood from my baby. If only I had known then what was in store for her.

From this point on Brielle had so many blood tests that you could never have counted and I found that some patholigists should find another bloody job. It is so hard to watch your child go through this so many times and all this lasted months before they could determin whether or not Brielle was acute or chronic ITP. A trip to both the childrens hospitals in sydney was how we found that out.

Next article I will tell you about Bone marrow tests and Steroids. Thanks for reading hope this helps someone.

Hi
We have decided with Jalan that if they can't get her needles for blood or drips in the first try then they get someone who can
She is not a pin cushion for them to practice on

Incredible story
I just gotta say how incredible it is that the doc was able to diagnose so soon and correctly for you.  That is wonderful that it was not a drawn out process.  You are both so brave.  *big hugs*
Peace

I'd been wondering what ITP was....
and now you've cleared it up. It sounds like a pretty bad illness, and to have had it from such a young age. You have had such a difficult journey but from reading some of your articles it sounds like you're doing a terrific job. You're a wonderful mum, Lexi. Take care Hayley

Heal Prick
I remember when Jaidans heal prick test came back as positive for CF (Cystic Fibrosis). The lady rang me and told me on the phone that he "has CF and needs to come in for a sweat test". I cried for days thinking about how he wouldn't live long and be very sick as I know a lot about CF.
Turns out he was just a carrier and I was so mad that she hasd said he had it.
