Children with bruises part 4

lexiw by lexiw Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 10th)

ok so now here we were with Brielle on steroids, she was looking very swollen like someone had put an air pump into her little body and was very slowly filling her with air. During this time I was terrified her platelets were so low that anything she did frightened

the hell out of me and because by this stage Brielle was a toddler she was constantly hurting herself. She looked like someone had beaten her with a stick all over as she was covered from head to toe in bruises.

I would walk through the shopping centre with my daughters and people would stop and stare, first at one daughter and then at the other, some people would ask what was wrong with Brielle and I would explain to them about the ITP, others would just stare. Someone even called department of childrens services on me becauses of the bruises on Brielle. Life was very hard at this time because all I wanted to do was wrap Brielle in cotton wool and not let her do anything. But by doing this I was making my daughter unhappy so once her levels were at a less dangerous level I had to find a way of letting my daughter enjoy life as much as she could.

Brielle had to be weaned off the tablets slowly over a period of time and was a bit moody because of this.

At one point when Brielle was about 2 1/2 years old I had enough of living in the city and not having anywhere that my children could play in the good clean dirt of where I grew up so I mentioned to Brielle's specialist at the childrens hospital that I was going to take her back to the country to see if it would make a difference for her to be in a healthier enviroment. I was told that I was being silly and that it would make no difference to Brielle where she lived but within two weeks of being in the country Brielle's platelet levels had increased not to normal levels of course but she wa doing alot better. I can't say for sure that this made any difference but I would like to think it did because now at eight years old her levels are good enough for her to live basically a normal life every now and then she sometimes has low levels but overall she is doing ok. We still have to keep an eye on her as she has chronic ITP and it is unlikely that it will just disappear after all this time but life is ok more often than not for her and that is what matters.

Thank you to you all for reading our story and I hope this helps people to understand what some families have to go through.

Re: Children with bruises part 4

Ok - I am glad to hear you followed your heart, moved to the country and saw a result.  My Canadian sister has a four and a half yr old who was diagnosed almost 5 months ago with ITP.  After repeated fortnigtly (every other week to every month) incidents of her platelets dropping, she would be infused with IVIG (I think).  Just now my sister has been told the next step is steroids and all the horrible side effects that go with it - (including brain shrinkage??!!??).  My sister is desperately looking for solutions to compliment the tradtitional medicine and to stop the platelets dropping.  She's had some recent success is fresh foods, limiting dairy, upping Ella's Vitamin C count, but it's still inconclusive.

At times, my sister has spoken of Ella's mood swings when the platelets start to take a dive.

Is anyone else out there who has a child with this?  Has anyone had any naturopathic successes?  Is there anything we're missing?  (My sis is very concerned about the pool of donors who are now making up the blood products Ella has had - they need to look at the next steps.

Any ancedotes or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for even starting this thread Lexi.  And I hope all is ok for your little girl now.

Staring

Hey Kelly,

One thing that Brielle started doing ( probably not the best thing but she thought it was funny) was to carry a toy camera with her and when people stopped and stared she would walk up and hand them the camera and ask them to " Take a picture it lasts longer" LOL

THANK-YOU

That is one of my goals in writing these Merle. I want people to appreciate the beautiful healthy children that they have because I see so many kids out there that are just not getting the love and attention that they deserve.

A happy ending....
Wow, you have been through so much Lexi and you have done the best you can to give Brielle a normal life. And you're succeeding!!! You are so blessed to have such a strong little fighter. My thoughts are with you now and I'm praying that everything turns out for the best. It sounds like you still have to be very careful with her but hopefully she can continue to live a normal life. I hope someone is looking after you as well as you look after your children, i'm sure someone is looking over you!! Take care Hayley xx
