Fifth disease...Slap Cheek disease

cookclan by cookclan Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 3rd)
I thought I would write a bit of advice about a chilhood illness that has been through our home before...I remember when Michaela got up one morning with these bright red cheeks.....It looked like she had slept wrong on her face or someone had smacked her in the face...... It was a little scary actually.........I took her to the doctor and he diagnosed her with Fifth disease.....also  known as slap cheek disease......

Fifth disease is pretty common in school age kids.......The reason it is sometimes called slap cheek disease is becasue of the distinctive red rash on the cheek like someone has slapped it......Even though it is called Fifth disease it is actually a virus caused by parvovirus B19 and no it is not related to or the same as the one that dogs can get.....It cannot be passed from humans to dogs or from dogs to humans........

SYMPTOMS the first lot
  • Low grade fever
  • headache
  • runny nose
SYMPTOMS the second lot
  • A rash appears on the cheeks and face spreads down the body and onto the arms and legs....but it tends to be lighter than the face.

It states on www.kidshealth.org that it can take from 1 to 3 weeks for the rash to disappear....... Michaelas was gone in 4 days.......

The majority of Michaela's  preschool got this when she came down with it as it is contagious before the rash appears...... It is spread through bodily fluids like coughs and sneezes..... droplets of saliva and sharing cups or eating utensils......

Once your child or you have had this virus you usually become immune and will not get it again........ The best way to try to avoid this is through washing your hands.....This is no guarantee but it can not hurt........ There is no treatment for this because it is a rash caused by a virus so does not need antibiotics........ It is suggested but if you are pregnant and come in contact with this or have it to contact your obstetrician to discuss any complications this may casue in the first trimester.......

So if your child does come up with what looks like either a red face or red cheeks take them off to the doctor because it might just be slap cheek disease......

Have a great day
Cheers
Angie

Re: Fifth disease...Slap Cheek disease

We've had this at home as well - my little one had the rash basically all over, but didn't seem very bothered about it. It had been going round his nursery at the same time as chicken pox went round...what a lot of spotty/rashy/red kids

Re: Fifth disease...Slap Cheek disease

Hi,

My little girl Scarlett who is  13months seems to be suffering from slapped cheek, but also has the syptoms of vomiting, upset stomach, high temperature and very lethargic. She has the rash as described and has been poorly for 4 days now. She won't eat and we are trying to get fluids into her, but it hasn't been easy.

I must admit I'd never heard of slapped cheek until I went to the doctors, but he assured me it wasn't serious, but to keep her away from other babies for a few days. I did read on the net that after the rash has appeared the virus is no longer contagious. But I'm not taking any chances.

Thanks for the info
my son had everything that was mentioned above and it had only started when he started day care and i had thought it was an allergic reaction to the sunscreen, and because it went after about a week after i had supplied sunscreen to his day care thats what i had put it down to maybe i might get his day care to try their sunscreen again and see what happens

slap face
Freaky, but my mum had it last year and she's in her 60's. Luckily for us she didn't pass it on to anyone else and we don't know where she came in contact with it.

Slap Face

I remember this! I had this happen in a childcare centre when I was working there. As I was the only one not pregnant at the time, I was left in charge of the child. Every child got it but I was lucky enough not to get it.

Our centre had a quiet couple of weeks though!

slap face
My son Jordan had slap face TWICE!!! Would you believe it but he came down with it the night before his very first day of school so I had to keep him home for the week. His actually started on his ears and it looked like little mozzie bites. It soon spread to the face and neck but he didn't have itching. The second time was a year later although it was not so bad this time round. It surprised me how many people had never heard of it before and looked at me like I was crazy!

slapped face pregnancy warning

this went around our school about 2.5 years ago, I was pregnant with my second. My doctor informed me that If i came in contact with slapped face, the risk of miscarrying was very high, and he advised not sending my eldest daughter to kindy, I had already had 3 miscarriages. It is very dangerous to pregnant women in the first 16 weeks. About 3 weeks after baby was born She came home with slapped face, amazing hay, but there is more, then about a week after i had our little bub the older baby then had it. There is nothing the doctors can do except tell you to give paracetamol if kids are in pain or uncomfortable. Great advice because this Virus is becoming more and more common.

Slap cheek disease
Whoa.. I had never heard of this one before now. Thankyou for this advice. It's really important to be aware of all the different types of diseases kids can get so that parents either get it treated promptly or don't worry too much unnecessarily. I would have been pretty concerned myself. I would have been immediately thinking it was the mumps or something sinister like that. I find it's better to be safe than sorry though and take my bub to the doctor to give them a thorough checkup whenever he's sick. It can be expensive but it gives me piece of mind. (PS I never let him play with any toys in the surgery or go near anyone if he is sick - I don't want any little bubbies or other kiddies getting sick!)

Anyway, enough of my rambling, Very informative, Thanks again 's Hayley
