Preparing to go back to school

mcm by mcm Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 5th)

My daughter has been counting down the days, for the past fortnight, til she heads back to school.  This year she is in grade two. She loves the social aspect of school more than anything else. As much as she loves free time and hanging out with her brothers she really does thrive when she is with her friends.
I personally like the holidays because then there is less need for routine (which doesn't suit me much). But now there is one more day before my girl goes back to school. And are we prepared?

  • Uniform - Thankfully my girl still fits her uniform from Prep! I will still need to get her extras eg. t-shirt and jumper with logos.
  • Labels - Nothing worse than losing all their belongings on the first day back. Even a few minutes labelling can save money and heartache.
  • Folder - Invest in a folder to put school related information and notes. Last year I misplaced so many little pieces of paper, I don't want that to happen this year.
  • Lunch - Make sure there is enough bread for sandwiches, fruit for a snack and a water bottle for the hot days.
  • Sleep - Having enough rest will help make things go more smoothly. For parent and child.

My girl is now talking about walking to and from school on her own. I think at her age, (almost 7) I (hmmm  not her!) am not ready. The second half of last year I allowed her some independance by watching her walk from the corner one block from the school. And then allowing her to meet me at the same place after school. I know as time goes on I will allow her to walk further on her own but for now this suits us.

I am looking forward to the new school year, for the adventures my eldest experiences and shares with us. It is wonderful.

Preparing to go back to school
It's so hard to let go isn't it... My son wanted to walk home when he was in grade 2, so as the school was directly behind our house with a path running beside the parkland / flood-way & there were no roads to cross, I used to stand on my back veranda & watch him walking home. They get to a stage where it's just not cool having mum coming to get them all the time. On occasion I would still meet him & he was fine with that, because I had let him have his independence when he needed it early on. How quickly they grow up... Now years later he still likes me to meet him now & then... and he's 25yo!
