Shaken Baby Syndrome (Sbs) What is it?

Anonymous Author (January 2007)

Why would anyone want to shake a baby?
Some times babies cry and we don't know why, usually it is because they have needs and this is there way to communicate what they need and want!

As a first time breast feeding mum, my eldest never
gave my ears a break, Crying most days and nights. It was frustrating not knowing what to do. I made that many phone calls begging for help but none was avalibe.I would try everything to calm her some times it work, sometimes it didn't.
I would feed her, change her burp her play with her, cuddle her every thing. When it got to much I'd ring my mum and she would come and get her. I was usually in tears by this time helpless. I eventually worked out that each of her crys where different. Hayley was getting that upset she would refuse everything in the end and cry herself to sleep. I still feel that i some how neglected her because i couldn't help her with what she needed.I no inside i did the best for her i could do but i wish i had had the resource avalible to me so i could have done more..

When baby number two came along i was so scared this was going to happen again, which it didn't. That i overly prepared myself taking times of when i last feed him, changed him and gave him sleep, so that Hayley was looked after properly..

I never lost my temper with her and was extremely exhausted and depressed by not being able to help her.

But sometimes people cant control there frustrations, because of (P.n.d) post natal depression, lack of sleep, Violent pasts, Relationship issues. This can cause us to lose our temper and Shake the baby!!!!
Try everything you know to comfort baby five six or seven times if need be. lose of control of emotions..

What Can Happen when baby is Shaken Violently?

  • Shaking Baby Violently causes there head to rotate back and forth similar to whip lash. This can cause the brain to bleed (hemorrhage) and swell by stretching and tearing blood vessels.
  • Bleeding in the eyes is another consequence
  • Blindness
  • Brain Damage
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Seizures or epileptic Fits (Epilepsy)
  • Learning Problems
  • Behavior Problems
  • DEATH
Can this happen by accident or play, lets say if baby fell from the bed or change table or even by bouncing on Grandpa's knee?

No, Accidental falls don't cause the same kind of injury. Sure baby's head would get bumped around a little but not to the extremes of causing these kinds of injury's. But have them checked anyway as it can cause other injury's

How Can I tell if a baby has been Shaken?

  • Irritability(not in every case, some times if a baby is irritable they might actually be tired)
  • Lethargy (also not always this may be caused by tiredness so don't jump to red alert if baby has these two symptoms) .
  • Breathing Problems
  • Feeding problems
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures, Convulsions, Fits, Epileptic fits
If you know this has happened to a baby any baby, seek help immediately. Do not hesitate this could be a life or death situation...

Shaken baby

As a mother whose youngest son (by adoption) was shaken, beaten, broken, starved and left to die, thank you for posting this.  He was lucky in that he lived, albeit with many difficulties to face throughout his lifetime, but many babies die or are left in a vegetative state.

Report any suspected child abuse, any mother who appears to need help...do not fear that you may be wrong, fear that you may be right.

He's 9 TODAY

Thanks for you kind words.  My little angel is nine today.  By coincidence I am beginning to tell the stories of adopting my 3 youngest sons and their difficulties at my blog (feeds are posted on my minti blog too).  He has cerebral palsy, vision difficulties, is autistic, ADD, and more, has endured several surgeries with more to come...but he is a happy loving little guy.  Gee, he's actually not so little anymore.  Check out my blog post today Jan 30 for a brief note about him.

Thanks for asking.

shaken
I know that things can get so chaotic and stressful with a new bub,I have bipolar and pregnancy brought on a severe downer for me,I was working 7 days a week(Breanna was with me at work) managing a tourist concern 16-18 hrs a day.Breanna was mildly lactose intolerant so she was not a happy bub till around 6 months.I averaged 2hrs of sleep in a 24 hr period.......I am painting a picture of why I nearly snapped and shook my precious gift......I managed to put her down in time and run into the next room.......I was absolutely shattered,I was run down from over working and breastfeeding I wasn't eating properly cause everything I ate seemd to effect Breanna.......I know exactly how this horrendous act can happen.....I got help and went on medication, there are some that you can take whilst breast feeding.I think it is paramount that if you get to a stage where you might shake or harm your baby that you place bub in their cot and you walk away for 10 minutes or enough time to calm down.Bub will be far safer and so will your sanity.Great article thank-you Merle

shaken
I was also getting 2 hours sleep out of 24. I never shook her but i got very angry put her in her cot screaming and rang my mum she took her also not knowing what was wrong and gave me a few hours peace. I was also breastfeeding and barely eating myself as she was always in my arms i couldn't get her away from me. It turned out that i wasn't producing breast milk. i was expressing everything i could do to build up my supply of milk. I found out because on day i was feeding her for two hours, i got so sore i couldn't take it anymore and tried to express. Nothing came out. She lost weight she was hungry the health nurse said it was normal for bub to lose weight blah blah blah and didn't take any notice Hayley's dad went and bought formula and everything i needed it was nearly midnight. She ate nearly 200 grams at three months first formula feed and slept all night... i was sooooo relieved and soooo happy and finally sooooo rested.... I got worried that something was wrong we couldn't wake her after that feed no matter what we did. So we went to the emergency at the hospital where i had her.. She woke up  and there was nothing wrong with her.. She was also exusted and was sleeping in...

sad stuff

This is a small snippet info I found on us website

What is Shaken Baby Syndrome?
Shaken baby syndrome is a type of inflicted traumatic brain injury that happens when a baby is violently shaken.  A baby has weak neck muscles and a large, heavy head.  Shaking makes the fragile brain bounce back and forth inside the skull and causes bruising, swelling, and bleeding, which can lead to permanent, severe brain damage or death.  The characteristic injuries of shaken baby syndrome are subdural hemorrhages (bleeding in the brain), retinal hemorrhages (bleeding in the retina), damage to the spinal cord and neck, and fractures of the ribs and bones.  These injuries may not be immediately noticeable.  Symptoms of shaken baby syndrome include extreme irritability, lethargy, poor feeding, breathing problems, convulsions, vomiting, and pale or bluish skin.  Shaken baby injuries usually occur in children younger than 2 years old, but may be seen in children up to the age of 5.

Shaken Baby Syndrome (Sbs) What is it?
Good article... I don't think any of us can ever say that we've never felt close to shaking our child through frustration or anger... It's how we respond to those feeling's when they arise... It's a shame that communities are not as close knit as they once were... A time long ago when you could call on a trusted neighbor to lend a helping hand & allow a young mum the break she needs.

When my daughter's little boy gets so out of control that she finds she's 'on the brink' she'll ring me, sometimes for hours at a time in order to calm down. At other times she will just come over home where she knows someone else can help bear the burden.

It's good if you can get a support network established around about you so that you have someone to call / help / listen / assist in times of crisis. Thankyou for the reminder of the damage we can do to the little one's if we loose control, after all it is up to us isn't it... we are the adults

Shaken Baby Syndrome (Sbs) What is it?
My Grand mother used to be able to leave the whole house unlocked Day and night and when she woke or came home everything would be in it's place. My mum also has been able to trust that if her friends where minding us we where safe... Not now... I don't even know who my next door neighbors are!!! Wish it was like old times...

Shaken Baby Syndrome (Sbs) What is it?
How accurate that is.. on a hot day we used to go out leaving our house completely open while we went for a swim down the road, the only thing you would do was snib the front screen door to stop the wind catching it. When you got home the house would be cool. No-one ever needed to lock their car, let alone put the window up, we would even leave the keys in it overnight. In those days people would stop on the side of the road & ask if you needed a helping hand & most of the time it was safe to accept it... These days, no-body seems to care anymore. It's so sad that we have to TEACH our kids not to talk to people; Most of what I learned as a child was taught to me through intermingling in the community... you asked people what they were doing & why & they actually took time to talk to you... By the way, I know my neighbors name, but that's it, haven't a clue WHO he is... Sad isn't it?

Now I really feel old... 'when i was a girl... ' (LOL)
