preparing before your baby walks

franni by franni Standing(January 2007) (rank 252nd)
this might come easy to some babys, they normally start walking before there first birthday or just after.
my daughter didnt walk untill she was 15 months old.

here are some tips on how to prepare your child and your house before they start walking:

  • To stop your bubs getting hurt, make sure all the sharp corners had corner protectors on them i remember when lillian fell and hit her head on the coffee table, i felt so bad she got a massive bruise. make sure stairs are outta reach , they do crawl up. my sister has styairs in her house leading from the lounge room, we were sitting having a cuppa when i noticed lillian crawling up the stairs, one second she was next to me the next she was up them stairs. so my sister go a gate and we ended up putting that up.
  • walkers are fantastic ideas for helping baby to walk, although my daughter always seemed to want to get out she never really got the gift of the walker, we put her in it and he feet would reach the floor but she just didnt want to move her legs. they can be dangerous and cause injurys. one day she got out and it fell to the side and her hand was jammed underneath the walker.
  • i found that she always seemed to stand up properly, and make steps, when she had no shoes on, when she did have them on she would get a bit clumsy. i think its strange, its great that you have baby shoes out there for pre walkers, but when there trying to walk wouldnt you take there shoes of them. now i see a lot of mums trying to get there child to walk with shoes on. especially at play group.
  • i found that toys that entise her to walk worked the best to get her to walk. we got her a pusher and she was pushing it around the house in no time. so i would recomand them pushers.
  • enjoy the process. i used to say i cant wait till she walks, when is she going to walk.. she finally did but instead of walking she runs everywhere, so make sure you enjoy the time when they are just crawling, they learn so fast.

baby first steps
Hi
Cool article
Jalan is 15 months tomorrow....wonder if she will walk lol
She cruises the furniture but wont let go
For the first time last night her sister was walking with her and suddenly let her go and she stood there in total confusion for about 3 minutes then realised she was holding nothing and dropped to her butt again
She took one step to the couch then sat on her butt.....i don't think shes quite ready but i wish she would stop climbing up on the chairs lol
Luv Deb

A baby walker may have worked for you BUT

Baby Walkers are Dangerous!

  • Baby walkers send more than 14,000 children to the hospital every year.
  • 34 children have died since 1973 because of baby walkers.

Children in baby walkers can: Roll down the stairs - which can cause broken bones and head injuries. This is how most children get hurt in baby walkers.

Right... BUT
That I believe is the parents fault. If your not watching your child and you dont have stairs blocked off then what do you think will happen??!?

preparing before your baby walks

baby walkers are great if used correctly... i used to take mine with me to friends places... specially if we were all outside on a deck or patio.. then he could stroll around and be happy.. rather then getting splinters and cuts on his knee's plus ruining his clothes...

as for stairs yes i know whwere u are coming from in regards to babies having fallen down them.... but in the walker or out of it... responsible parents SHOULD ALL have their steps baby gated off.... they will fall and break bones etc in or out of a walker down stairs

Kind Regards

Jas

If a parent is responsible and watches the child while in a baby walker then there is no problem. It is only when a parent is irresposible that the child gets hurt ( unless there is a fault in the making of a baby walker) My three children have all used baby walkers and have never hurt themselves because they have never been left alone while in a walker. I stayed with my children the whole time and never took my eyes off them as it should be with most baby products.

Don't get me wrong... I agree wholeheartedly that baby walkers are a good thing... i used one myself for both my kids & found one for my daughter when she had her children... When a parent is responsible & watches their child they are the best invention in the world...

BUT the fact remains, it is not only stairs that pose a danger when using a walker. Parents need to be sure there is nothing on the floor which can cause the walker to tilt.

Did you know that a child in a walker can move more than 3 feet in 1 second...? I was so shocked when I read that fact... How quick can you move... can you be sure you would reach your child if you needed to? I know I used to wander into my attached kitchen to get a cup of coffee on occasion,  so had my attention diverted for a few seconds... yes, I was irresponsible..Even with close adult supervision I have personally witnessed a baby walker tip on a flat surface due to other children leaning on it... The mother could not reach the child in time to prevent the tilt. The new stationary walkers with the rotating seat & attached toys are a much safer alternative for keeping a baby amused.... Anyhow this is just my personal opinion.
