constipation

Anonymous Author (June 2006)

recently my baby daughter 6mths started on solids, just veges, baby rice and some fruits, after about a week of successsful weaning onto solids, she is now very constipated! Still breastfeeds, and not sure why this has accured! Any ideas as to why this would be the case?

My first son had the same problem and we were forever giving him glycerin suppositories which to anyone would be very tragic but when it is your own child, it takes on a whole other emotion. What would happen to my son is if he had too much solids and not enough milk throughout the day, he would get constipated. With some babies, I think it is just too heavy for their stomachs. Hope this helps a bit!

My bub's nearly 6 months old and has been weaned onto solids for about 2 weeks now. He's been quite constipated and I'm quite concerned over it. Hope it's only cause his belly need to adjust and get used to solids as I've been giving him extra fluids and watery foods from the start. More advise on this subject would be welcomed!

I think that the adjustment from milk to solids is a slow process, it will differ for each child.

However, keeping it soft and almost fluid at first - as though slowly thickening the consistency is an advantage.

Bubs will enjoy the new textures and as you experiment with different pureed veges kep portions small and just increase as baby seems to want more adjusting milk intake to keep a balance and baby full of good food.

I found pureeing my own food for E paid off as she didn't like the shop baby foods all that much.  I hope that this all helps a little bit for people going through this.
Peace

Milk
There may not be enough water in your milk, do you drink plenty of water? if so try her on food, breastmilk and a little boiled water poision's suggestion is also a very clever idea but if this continues after every effort bring it up with her GP or even free health nurse when you go next.

Constipation

I think your baby will get over it after a while.  It's just that your babies body isn't used to the solids and after a while of eating the solids she will get used to it.  My son was the same way.
