Baby Walkers

lexiw by lexiw Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 11th)

I just read a comment about baby walkers being dangerous and baby walkers causing deaths. I really have to disagree. On most baby products there are labels that state you should never leave your child unattended while using the product. I never once left my children alone in a baby

walker and never once were they hurt while in a walker. I never took my eyes off them while they were using the walker, to me this is just common sense but to some it is obviously not. How can a child be serously hurt in a walker if the stairs are blocked off, Things are out of reach and the responsible adult is watching the child closely?

I hate hearing parents bad mouth such a good product so that they can blame the product and not face up to the fact that they made a mistake.

Don't get me wrong I know that there are some instances where a child could be hurt due to a malfunction in the walker or something similar to that but that is a very small few. So I suggest that if you want to get your child a walker go for it just never take your eyes off the child while they are using it. They are a great product if used correctly.

exactly!
I totally agree. I used one with both my boys and passed it onto my sister for Drake and none of them got hurt ever. Its a great product and people wanna bitch about it cos they were being irresponsible and not watching? PFFFT!

Great words!
You are so right Lexi. My daughter liked her walker a lot, and admittedly i was really scared of putting her in one because of all the safety warnings, but i knew that if i watched her closely, that nothing would go wrong, unless of course there was something wrong with the walker!
It's just common sense to block of that stair way or to not leave your child unattended at anytime whilst in a baby play toy!

Too true
I never bought Nick a baby walker because I was scared by all those warnings. I wish I had now. Although I was living in a small place back then so i s'pose there wasn't enough room anyway. Must say I kind of figured your point - how could they get hurt if you're watching them?
Well done to point this out. Hopefully it will encourage others to buy them and watch their kids using them.

Read the manual
I know that the manual is meant to be written for fun and to occupy some poor person who cant get a different more exotic job - but truly, reading what they took care and time to write does pay off!!!  baby products are notorious for being 'dangerous if wrongly/incorectly used'.  There is no shame in reading the instruction.
Great advice Lexi.  I know I am with you when i assume it is common sense.
Peace

Agree
If these types of things were so dangerous they would be banned, my walker also had a mechanism on it that if the child went over stairs, it locked and did not go and further then the first step.  All baby products can be potentially dangerous, its up to common sense on how these products are used.

I agree
I totally agree with you Lexia.  My little boy is 6 months old and he just loves his walker.  We have no stairs and everything that could bring him harm is out of his reach.  My bub hates tummy time so he is not interested in crawling so this is away he can get around before he is about to walker.  Thanks for you advice.

I have seen
so many bubs use and love walkers..........I couldn't afford one for my Son and my daughter hated hers???? She preferred getting about by herself,I geave hers away LOL I think most baby products are great as long as we don't use them as baby sitters.Adult supervision is a must at all times regardless.Good one Lexi hugs Merle

Baby Walkers
Agree with everything you said Lexi
I used to love watching the fun my kids had in a baby walker and the independence it gave them.
As for accidents, like you say, you never leave them unattended in them. I had 4 children each spending a good part of their day in a baby walker but never had a single accident. I used to play with them and crawl along beside. If you are distracted, phone, doorbell, cooking, or whatever, you take them out and either take the child with you or leave them somewhere they can't come to any harm

Parents helpers
I agree!  I bet the accidents involved stairs, I have had 3 kids, all used walkers, and not one of them ever got hurt while in the walker!  Do not rely on a baby gate as your stand in babysitter, children can knock them down.  Or someone may not use it correctly.  It is your job as a mother to keep your kids safe, just use common sense.  Dont leave children in a walker, jumper, swing, etc unattended.  Follow the guidelines and warnings on all products.  Think of how much these products have helped all of us moms and dads!  They are our helpers!

I agree

and I think the same way....

So many things can be considered dangerous - anything can I guess....gee, I know someone who will not allow cotton wool in their home because of the dangers....and I bet there are a bunch of people who would never have thought about the horrors of cotton wool too.....doesnt' mean we need to go out and discard that product...just be careful and take notice....

I know there are issues with baby walkers and some are valid...but as with everything....use in moderation, use with caution....and most of all....be there, be around and don't take things for granted when you're using them...

Thanks Lexi - I just brought one not long ago for my grandchild....starting to feel like I was the only person who still loved 'em...

Cheers

Lavinia
