When my eldest daughter was born, like most babies, she didn't have any teeth.
At 3 months, she still didn't have any teeth.
At 6 months - no teeth.
9 months - no teeth.
By this stage we were starting to get a bit concerned. We
spoke to the baby health nurse, and she assured us that some babies don't get teeth until they're 12 months old.
12 months - no teeth.
We spoke to the baby health nurse, the doctor and the dentist. The baby health nurse assured us that we could still feed our baby chunky solid foods - even without teeth - because they could chew quite successfully with their gums. The doctor assured us she was healthy and there were no concerns. Our dentist assured us that although it was unusual, they didn't usually worry unless kids were 18 months and still no teeth. And even then it was only a matter of investigating why it hadn't happened with x-rays and the like.
About this time other parents who had had late-teething babies seemed to start appearing. We were given advice (or an old wives tale!) that if you got teeth late, they'd be stronger and less likely to need fillings. I even had the privilege of meeting one lady who had never had a first set of baby teeth and so had been gummy until she was 4 when she finally got her adult set of teeth. She told me she used to be able to eat apples with just her gums they had gotten so tough. But she had a great full set of teeth when she was older.
At 15 months -still no teeth.
Finally, at 17 months (a couple of weeks before I gave birth to her sister) my daughter got her very first tooth. I could not describe the relief I felt! The other teeth came in time, but it wasn't particularly quick.
With her sister, I was expecting a similar wait. Imagine my surprise to find her first tooth appearing at 6 months!
The conclusion of this story is just to bring attention to some of the extremes of development when it comes to teeth and also a good reminder that kids are going to be different, even if they have the same parents.
