Beat the Winter Cold

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(January 2007) (rank 101st)
Today's first time parenting tip - Keep the baby's room around 70-72 degrees F

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, it's the middle of winter. That means biting cold, wind and perhaps the most discouraging of all - drafts.

No matter what you set the thermostat
at, there always seem to be areas in the house or the apartment that are colder than others. If you've got a sleeping baby in the house, that could spell bad news. If the room the baby is sleeping in is cold, you'll have middle-of-the-night wake ups at best, hypothermia at worst.

Here's how you can keep your infant as comfortable as possible during winter.

  • Pick a room for the baby that has as few windows as possible

  • If the room has windows, cover them with heavy drapes or plastic

  • Use Styrofoam stuff window sills and drafty doors

  • Place the baby's crib as far from the window as possible

  • Put a space heater in the baby's room

  • Dress your infant in warm, full length pajamas

  • Use a crib pad to block any errant drafts

  • Keep the rest of your house around 70 degrees, even at night

Follow these tips and you'll be able to beat the best Jack Frost can throw at you.

Hey there
Hi, just wondering if you could explain what a crib pad is?  Ta - Lui.

Hey there
It's basically a cloth or covering that goes around the inside edge of the crib - it's mostly meant to protect infants from hitting their heads on the bars or from getting a leg or an arm caught.

Thanks for the tips..

Excellent... My daughters room is soo warm and toasty and I don't even have to put a blanket on her.. She will just take it off anyways  But when she was in our room, I would have to wake up several times a night and make sure she was warm because our room was a little colder then the rest of the house, and I would have to turn my heat up high enough so that it would be warmer.. Mind you, my husband and I were sleeping on top of the covers because it was too warm for us but it was just right for our daughter! Good advice, thanks for this

I will remember these tips or look back on them when we move to another place and it's a little colder in her room.. Again, I want to say thanks!

carefull with heaters
Just be carefull if you put a space heater in your childs room, they cause fires every year, so if you use one make sure it is in good working condition, no frayed cord, keep it out of your childs reach and be sure it has a shut off switch that will engage if it is tipped over.

good call. You should also get one that's made of plastic or some other material that doesn't conduct heat easily. That way if your little one happens to touch it while or shortly after it's running, they don't get burned.
