Yogurt: When is the right time to give it to your baby?

Kristen by Kristen Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 167th)
Yogurt was a lifesaver at our house when our toddler Ethan was younger.  In fact, his cousin Carter is five and he practically lives on yogurt.  With all the health benefits that yogurt offers for your digestion, when is the best time to give your baby yogurt for the first
time and what kind of yogurt should you be giving your baby?
  • Studies show that yogurt can be given to babies as young as 9 months of age.  While it is recommended that you wait to give dairy products to your child after they reach one year old, yogurt is processed differently by the body than milk and is more soothing to the stomach and less likely to cause allergic reactions.  The caution against giving yogurt to children under 9 months of age is simply to avoid all concerns of allergic reactions or the onset of allergies.  We waited until Ethan was 9 months old to be on the safe side, but some parents have given yogurt to their babies earlier and have never had an allergic reactions or concerns.
  • If you can find it, baby yogurt or any yogurt made with whole milk is the best.  Regular yogurt is normally fat free or made with 1% milkfat and just doesn't have the fat that babies need.  However, sometimes baby yogurt or whole milk yogurt is difficult to find.  The best bet is to check in the section with the organic dairy products.
  • Even better, some baby yogurts are fortified with iron so your baby is getting the best of both worlds.  If you can't find a baby yogurt with iron, you can always mix a little baby cereal in with your yogurt to get that extra punch.
If you find you have a fussy eater, baby yogurt may be a lifesaver for you too.  On those days that we found that Ethan just didn't want anything to eat, he never seemed to say "no" to that sweet baby yogurt full of vitamins.  What kind of foods have you mixed in with the yogurt to make it even more enjoyable for your baby?  Share your great tips with us in the comments.

Re: Yogurt: When is the right time to give it to your baby?

Something to think about, my clinic nurse tells everyone! Yes yogurt is good for you and everything BUT remember that eating is about learning! What does a baby learn from eating yogurt? nothing it is smooth just like milk that they have been having for 6 months already. What is in yogurt? A lot of the same as in milk which they are already having so it is not really much help early on. It is also something that they will more then likely like anyway so start on the "yucky" vegies first before starting on the yummy stuff so they like the vegies and you wont have a fussy bub later on !!!!! :)

Re: Yogurt: When is the right time to give it to your baby?

I started Michael on baby yogurt at 6 months, which is when they can start baby yogurt. He loves it!! He has a tub a day in between breakfast & lunch. If I forget, then by lunchtime Michael is refusing to eat his lunch. As I cook all his meals, I find yogurt great as its one thing that I can just grab from the fridge & its healthy. We add lots of fruit to Michaels, I find it a great way to get him to eat fruits he doesnt like, like avocado. I started with the yogurt thats made like breast milk, then I moved onto baby yoplait as it comes in a 6 pack, the first one only comes in 4 packs. I will probally start him on normal yogurt after he is drinking cows milk. (Around 1yo) I can add anything to yogurt & Michael will eat as much of it as possible. Thank God for yogurt!!

Re: Yogurt: When is the right time to give it to your baby?

My one year old boy enjoys his yoghurt so much that he screams and complains when he's finished eating. He is currently on children's yoghurt but its sometimes so hard to find in stores. I would like to start him on normal adult yoghurt (plain flavour at first) but I'm not sure when...is now too soon?

My girl loves the drinkable yogurt, with strawberries, apples, peaches, grapes, or pears mixed into regular yogurt is a great snack!  very nice.

Great advice and I also heard for babies with lactose intolerance yoghurt can be given due to the different way it is digested by the body. I amgoing to try Sam when he is 9 months-they think he may be lactose intolerant.

Great advice
I gave my babies the baby yoghurt at 6 months! They still eat it daily at breakfast time. It's a great food and so healthy.

Great advice
In this day and age it is so difficult to get them to eat healthy that I am just so glad when he finds anything good that he likes.  I hope mine hangs on to his yogurt habit like yours have.

Baby loves this stuff!

I started my youngest at 9 months on the Yo Baby yogurt. He loves it and I can feel good about giving it to him. I like that they also have the yogurt with fruit and cereal. It makes for a nutrious breakfast or anytime meal. I think it is great! :)

How about that Yo Baby?  Ethan was crazy for it.  So crazy that I started to worry that he didn't want to eat anything else.  LOL.  Then one day he had moved on to those Yogurt Smoothies instead and didn't want any part of regular yogurt.  Something about being a big boy and DRINKING it.  Kids are crazy...

7 months here

I gave my boys yogurt early @ 7 months. I always gave my boys  a taste of what I was eating so  it was just a somethingt different for them.  My youngest loved mushed fruits in his.  I gave him mashed bannana's, blue berries, strawberries, anything  that he liked of the baby food fruits i gave him. Of course the yogurt was plain. Than I slowly moved on to the yogurt that had fruit in it already.

Till this day they both love yogurt! and the fruit!

I tried to get creative but he wasn't having any part of it.  He would just look at it like he knew I had messed with it.  I tried several times to add my own cereal because he just wasn't into it anymore and I as worried that he wasn't getting enough iron.  He took one bite and spit it out.  No fooling him.  LOL.

Started that age with my daughter

Excellent advice!! I think that's when I started yogurt with my daughter. I have found that with the whole milk it makes my daughter constipated, so I keep with the normal yogurt.
I don't think I have mixed yogurt with anything else to make it more enjoyable for her. I will have to think of something, thanks for that though!!

Again, thanks for writing this up, as it will help parents out there who are wondering when they should give yogurt to their babies/kids!!

You make a great point about the constipation issue, Ally.  We never had it but it is certainly something to be aware of when it comes to whole milk products.  Thanks for the reminder.
