Yogurt: When is the right time to give it to your baby? |

Yogurt was a lifesaver at our house when our toddler Ethan was younger. In fact, his cousin Carter is five and he practically lives on yogurt. With all the health benefits that yogurt offers for your digestion, when is the best time to give your baby yogurt for the first time and what kind of yogurt should you be giving your baby?
- Studies show that yogurt can be given to babies as young as 9 months of age. While it is recommended that you wait to give dairy products to your child after they reach one year old, yogurt is processed differently by the body than milk and is more soothing to the stomach and less likely to cause allergic reactions. The caution against giving yogurt to children under 9 months of age is simply to avoid all concerns of allergic reactions or the onset of allergies. We waited until Ethan was 9 months old to be on the safe side, but some parents have given yogurt to their babies earlier and have never had an allergic reactions or concerns.
- If you can find it, baby yogurt or any yogurt made with whole milk is the best. Regular yogurt is normally fat free or made with 1% milkfat and just doesn't have the fat that babies need. However, sometimes baby yogurt or whole milk yogurt is difficult to find. The best bet is to check in the section with the organic dairy products.
- Even better, some baby yogurts are fortified with iron so your baby is getting the best of both worlds. If you can't find a baby yogurt with iron, you can always mix a little baby cereal in with your yogurt to get that extra punch.
If you find you have a fussy eater, baby yogurt may be a lifesaver for you too. On those days that we found that Ethan just didn't want anything to eat, he never seemed to say "no" to that sweet baby yogurt full of vitamins. What kind of foods have you mixed in with the yogurt to make it even more enjoyable for your baby? Share your great tips with us in the comments.
