order out & stock up ....complimentary condiments

LaRenae by LaRenae Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 30th)

Whenever we go out to eat, order take out or get orders to go ... I welcome all of the free condiments such as sauce packs, paper napkins, paper plates, kids menus with crayons and plastic cutlery .... Whatever we do not use at the time of the meal gets

saved and is used later for future uses :

Sauce Packs : ketchup, mustard and mayonaisse packs that we collect from restaurant take out orders get used when we run out of these items ... and other sauces like soy and sweet/sour can be used to marinate and flavor various meats that you cook for dinner.

Paper Napkins : These can always be used for every day use or save a bunch that match to use at your next baby's party

Paper Plates : Most restaurants do not give these out, but if they do, save them for your future gatherings ... again can be used for your next baby''s party

Kids Menus/Crayons : These can be saved for rainey days with the kids ... My boy is not quite ready for coloring/activity pages ..... but I am saving all those sticker pages, coloring pages, crayons and such for later fun ....

Plastic Cutlery : These are used for when we leave the house ... because if they get lost or need to be tossed out after use, then no great loss ... also, again, if enough are collected they  can be used for future parties ....

Free condiments, cutlery and children's activity pages are geat things to stock up on when ordering out .... If your order is stuffed with goodies, then save those goodies for future use ...

So, order out and stock up ! Accept the complimentary condiments ...

Had to clarify what I meant after reading some comments .... Keep in mind, I do not mean to snatch handfuls and handfuls of freebies and be a pig about it ... but a lot of places we go to automatically put things in with the order when they package it up ... so I save what we don't use for later .... Also, if I get three packs of something and only use two, I save the extra one ... etc. well, you get the idea .... And when we dine in a restaurant and ask for a kids menu to order off of it is usually a coloring page which my boy is too young to use yet, but I am saving those in a folder for later ... I agree to not be a pig about it ... But also I hate to waste anything either that can be used later ... Thanks everyone for your comments .... I really enjoy how we all help each other out by giving our own perspectives about things .... Love the Minti !

Keeping extras in the diaper bag or in the car...

Ha ha!  I am a natural saver -- or should I say "hoarder"?  So I have to be careful not to save the condiments or the ketchup packets can overwhelm drawers in my kitchen!  I also really like to reuse the plastic cups that my children get served at the restaurant, but I have had to throw some out or my husband would go bananas!

We don't do drive-thru restaurants very often, but when we do I like to keep any extra napkins & straws & plastic cutlery leftover from the takeout in the car.  They have come in handy when we're on the road!

Another thing I learned from a girlfriend:  keep an extra plastic cup with lid or an extra empty "sippy cup" in the car for traveling.  She told me that her son had gotten a drink from a drive-thru and it was in a styrofoam cup.  The straw pretty quickly made a hole in the cup & the poor child was soaked!  I have had the same thing happen to my children once since she warned me.  I was glad to have an extra cup handy to pour the leaky cup into!

And it is also helpful when I want to buy a drink or milkshake and split it with one of my kids or have them split a large portion.  Is it just me or do others find it always seem so wasteful to buy 2 small milkshakes instead of paying less and splitting a medium or large?!

So, in the big picture, I applaud not throwing away the "extras" that one gets from takeout or from restaurants.  But as a word of caution, if you frequent restaurants often, be choosy about what you keep, or your house may get buried in all of the stuff we are waiting to reuse!!!

SORRY!!!!
Glad you clarified that, I have seen people do that and it is annoying, but I agree if they give it to you with your meal then it is yours, also here if a resteraunt gives you packets of condiments, and you leave them on the table when you are done dining, they can not put them back, they have to throw them away for fear of contamination.  I did not mean to imply in ANY way that you were being a pig about it!  Sorry if that is how I came across.....

Complimentary Condiments
Hi
We save all our condiments we get and they come in handy for going camping especially the vegemites and jams you get with your breakfast meal
Some of the vegemites go in the baby bag so that if we are out we have her sandwich topping....
The spare sachets of salt come in handy also as they are the perfect measured amount for our daughters bottles.
We also only take what we need for our meal but sometimes the kids dont use theirs so in they go with the collection.
Luv Deb

Never waste

I agree with you, I never take more than we need either, but some places put these things in when they package the order, so I save them for later.

not for me
I think if they give it to you fine, but taking more than what you need costs the resteraunts money as these items are not free to them, I know a few packets and napkins are not going to make or break them, but surely if you can afford to eat out you can afford to buy your own crayons, napkins and sauces.  Someone along the way has to pay for these items.....not trying to rain on your parade, my parents had a resteraunt for years, so I am just giving the other sides view.

I will go back and edit and add this to the post ... Thanks !
