C-Section

Marlena by Marlena Young Parent(January 2007) (rank 12th)
I have had one baby and I am growing another one.   I knew with my first son that I would end up with a C-section because of my size.  The doctor didn't to make that decision until until my due date because if I could do it naturally he
wanted it to be done that way.  We ended up doing the C-section because there is no way I could ever have a child natural being 4"9" and 80 points, well 110 after full term.  My sister had told me about her C-sections with her two children which really helped me out with the fear of getting it done.  I tought I would try to find some useful info for other  mothers who may need a C-Section in the future.

Here is why you may need a C-Section: (This list was taken from http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/c-section/PR00078)
  • Your labor isn't progressing.
  • Your baby's heartbeat suggests reduced oxygen supply.
  • Your baby is in an abnormal position.
  • Your baby's head is in the wrong position.
  • You're carrying twins, triplets or other multiples.
  • There's a problem with your placenta.
  • There's a problem with the umbilical cord.
  • Your baby is very large.
  • You have a health problem.
  • Your baby has a health problem.
  • You've had a previous C-section.
I was gonna explain to you what happened to me when I had my C-section but I dont know the technical words.  I looked around and I found a really good website that you can take a look at.  There is info about C-Section before, during, after and some questions to ask your doctor.  It is a really go read if you gonna have a C-Section  or even have a baby.  It is always good to be prepared before you go in to have your baby natural because you could end up having a C-section.  If you read up about it then it wont be a surprise.

3 of them
I have had three, two of them i have been "booked in" but went into labor early and ended up having 3 emergency ones. I have to have them because i dont dilate. Its important to know all the fact about cesareans, when I had my first it was hard to find info on them, it is becoming more common though. Good advice, I enjoyed reading this.

Caesarians
hi!  I had an emergency c-section due to foetal distress (he had the cord wrapped around his head) and it was a very distressing experience.  However I am sure that is because I was not prepared.  Second time around I was much more informed and I prepared for the possibility of a caesar.

However I managed to have a VBAC.  I had a choice about my second birth - not everyone does.  My reasons for not wanting a second caesar were simple:
recovery time (yes you are up the next day but it is still a major surgery), feeding issues, lack of help at home with a toddler and psychological (i wanted to experience a natural birth)

However if there are reasons you have to have one (and make sure you do cause many obs schedule them in for invalid reasons) there are ways you can prepare.  You can see more info here (so I don't repeat myself)  - www.minti.com/parenting-advice/4245/Birth-Preferences/
Here is a great website for more help: www.birthrites.org/

Hope that helps!  (I was rambling a bit - sorry!)

body size does not matter
Hi there I had one natural......and 3 c sections...... I am just under 6 foot and I gave birth naturally to my first child weighing in a hefty 10lb 10ounces 67cm long and 42cm head circumfrence......I had alot of damge after this birth mentally and physically.....I think c sections are magic compared to my first experience but my mum is 5 foot 7 and she gave birth to me naturally and I was 10lb without a problem....... just my experience.......
Cheers

c section

I had to have a c section due to a couple of these reasons

  • Your labor isn't progressing.  (52 hours and he still wasn't coming out!)
  • Your baby is in an abnormal position.
  • Your baby's head is in the wrong position.
  •  Your baby is very large.

This article is great, and I wish I had known all this before I had my son!

Excellent advice, Thanks!

Informative
I think all women should be prepared for this possibility,I had an emergency ceaser and an elective........My first I was in hospital for 10 days,my second for 2 days??? There was 20 years between my children and there was a huge difference in proceedure and the way I was dealt with by hospital staff. Great article regards Merle

c sections

I had an emergency c section as i'm small boned and my daughter was too big to fit through. She was 9 pounds 1 when she was born, and had to go the emergency c section as she was getting stressed out.

It's not so scarey is it having a c section.

c sections
I had the same problem, except that we knew the baby was to big for me to have him naturally.  He was only 7p 5o but for a tiny person like me it was to big.  The C-Section was not bad at all, a bit painful but all worth it.

Thanks for sharing the list
Marlena, thanks for sharing that list for reasons why a mom would need to have a c-section.  It helps prospective moms to identify all the other times that they may NOT need one as well.  You make such a great point how being informed is so important.  Thanks for giving the link as well.

You never know
My first c-section was by emergency, three more followed two planned another emergency. Although my stay at thetime was a little longer I was up the next day even way back then they knew you had to be ambulant, over the course of the children arriving the stays got shorter but at no time did I feel forced to leave until I was ready. I believe some mums need a little longer and along with this info I believe there shoudl be the right to stay a little longer in hospital if you feel the need.

C Section
One of my jobs is to deliver the Bounty nappy packs to the local Maternity unit, so I see most babies and mums in this area and a mixture of c sections and normal deliveries. It always suprises me that nowadays both types of delivery are allowed home in the same length of time and both Kinds are up on their feet walking almost in the same time space. I was born by a c section myself and my Mum was on bedrest and in hospital for 3 weeks!!! Medicine has come a long way

C Section
Nell, statistically speaking in the US, the length of stay is still much longer for a c-section and recovery from major surgury is much longer as well.  If only it were the case everywhere as it is there.

C Section
Yeah I am sure medicine has come a long way. I was in the hospital for 5 days and it took about 2 weeks before I was getting on my feet.  It was very painful but worth it.

This is really useful
Thank you Marlena.  It is good to know about the possibilities and how sometimes itis necessary regardless of what our birthplan preferences are.
