Cutting baby's fingernails.

astrobeka by astrobeka Talking(January 2007) (rank 183rd)

Now this may seem obvious to some of you, but I was never given any tips on this. All I had been told was how hard it is to do, and some stories about little fingers getting hurt. I am by no means an expert on any subject, but wish

to offer my ideas for those of you who, like me before, wanted to know the easiest way to take care of some of baby's hygeine.

I discovered the easiest way to trim my baby's finger and toenails was to wait till he was having a nap. Having nails that seemed to grow fast and required clipping every 2-3 days to prevent scratching I needed an easy way to do this without baby getting upset or distressed.

Luckily he is a good sleeper, and I can lift and move his fingers and toes without waking him up.

This reduces the risk of baby flinching and getting hurt. My son also doesn't like having his hands held still and has ticklish feet, so clipping his nails while awake is VERY difficult.

I have also found that nap time can be used for those fiddly hygeine jobs that my son hates me doing, like cleaning his ears and between toes and fingers.

Before trying these though, wait till your child is asleep, and try holding his/her hand in the position you would have to to clip nails. Make sure your child will not flinch in his/her sleep to the sound of the nail clippers or the fact that you have moved a hand or foot.

But always be prepared for baby making a sudden move even while sleeping, and sometimes waking up and crying.

I hope this helps some of you who find little jobs like this to be difficult, like I used to!

Re: Cutting baby's fingernails.
I would do this if we had to - however Jaydee was always calm and collected so we have always done it when he is wide awake.  We usually do one hand, then give him a little time to play and get distracted before doing the other.  We figured that the sooner he got used to his grooming routine the better.

Now if only he would let us cut his hair without me having to make little snips here and there hoping he doesn't notice.

Try if you're able
I guess my comment will be quite different.  I never used to clip my babies nails but bite them off.  I know this may sound out there but it was something my mother did and her mother and my aunties and so on.  When you do it, you play with their fingers like a game.  That way they will let you stick their finger in your mouth.  Very gently feel with the tongue the nail and then nibble the end and pull gently.  Sometimes if you have hold of the nail and the child pull their finger it makes is easier.  Of course, there is a knack to it.  But you learn it over time.  I did this will all of my children and they are none the worse for it.  This is not for everyone but I found that the child and I have fun when we do it, so that now when their nails are long they let me shorten them without a fuss.

Sounds interesting
I used to do it as E was drowsy, that way she was conscious and aware of what I was doing - but it only actually disturbed her enough to wake her a couple of times, this makes it easier now and she even gets me the bag with the nail stuff in it.  Well worth while developing this habit when they are little so that it is easier as they grow.
Peace

Cutting Nails
I did the same, cut their nails whilst they sleep, nothing worse than cutting too close and hurting them cos they fidgeted as you were trimming them

Cutting baby's fingernails

I too did the exact same thing with both my kids, because when they are awake it is such an ordeal.

Simple things like this...and I never thought to share my tricks..lol

Thank you
Your advice is very simple but useful. I am the mother of a five week old baby and this advice makes a lot of sense. I should of thought of it myself but didn't. Milk brain I guess! Thanks again - works for me!

I used to do the same with my child, and always waited until she was asleep. Great advice.
