Thumb Sucking

Anonymous Author (January 2007)
Thumb sucking

BEFORE reading this article PLEASE understand that I am not saying anything against the use of a pacifier. In fact dummies  do have their purposes... my own Grand-daughter was given one in ICU to help settle her during the first weeks of her life
while her mother couldn't be with her constantly. The Nurses found it to be a God Send... So do many other parents. This article only  speaks regarding 'how to deal with a thumb-sucker... '

ALL babies suck their thumbs, it is an instinctive urge... Some do it more than others. Some babies suck their thumbs in the delivery room, others even while they are in the womb. It's rare for a child to commence thumb-sucking after 12 month.

Thumb-sucking comes naturally because

  • Your baby is hungry

  • Your baby wants comfort... they are lonely, tired, bored or frustrated. We should try to identify what is bothering the child & then set it right if possible.

  • Your baby is exploring their body

  • Your baby might be teething & like the feel of something on their gums. During teething babies often chew their thumbs, fingers or hands as it helps them relieve the pressure on their gums.

Yes it's true that thumb-sucking can displace your babies teeth however this is not permanent as only the baby's milk teeth are affected... UNLESS thumb-sucking continues beyond the age of 6 when their permanent teeth arrive.

It's believed that slowing down the flow from a babies bottle so that it takes them around 20 minutes to finish & using NEW teats with smaller holes can help to stop thumb-sucking all-together during your babies first 6 months.

Thumb-sucking usually disappears around the ages of 3-6

Strategies to Deal with Thumb-sucking

  • Don't pull their thumbs out of their mouth as this may be the very thing that causes a thumb-sucking habit to get worse. (It will make your child FEEL conscious about sucking their thumbs).

  • Don't nag, rather try to distract them by playing with them or giving them a toy.

  • As the child gets older you can try to encourage them to give up the habit in a friendly, non-judgmental manner

  • Some parents use substances painted on the childrens nails that have a foul taste when placed in their mouths...eg stop 'n' grow - available at chemist's. However there is debate on whether these products work for all children... (It does work for me however as when i get stressed I do go for my own nails)

Good Advice! No Pressure!

Every child is different, some will suck their thumbs some will not. My older daughter had neither a pacifier or her thumb, she just didn't want it. My younger daughter sucks her thumb and has since birth, we tried offering her a pacifier (several kinds even) and she refused. She's two now and still sucks it, I'm not even worried about it.

I sucked my thumb as a child, my mother-in-law says my husband did too. I did for years and years, my mom tried that stuff you paint on the nail to make it taste bad, I'd suck as hard as I could and suck it all off and then wipe my tongue and pop the thumb back in. LOL! She finally just let me be. It's such a small issue, really in the grand scheme of things.

Like shellshell said, if it makes them happy - so be it!

THUMB SUCKING

My daughter sucked 2 fingers from the day she was born. I then gave her the dummy, which lasted till she was 1.

For some reason she just didn't want her dummy, and now sucks her thumb! Although she only sucks it when she's tired, so it's a good way of letting me know she's ready for bed.

She's happy and if that makes her feel comfortable, then so be it!

Normal
My son never took to the pacifier and he doesn't really suck his thumb either, but I think it's perfectly normal, like you do. Good tip on advising against making a big deal about it. It seems that if a kid was nervous and self-conscious about doing something, it'd only make them want to do it more for comfort.

Never let my child

I will never let my kid suck on her thumb.. Only because it can do damage to their teeth while they are coming in. It push's their gums forward, which then when the teeth come in is called bucked teeth! I'd rather give a dummy instead of a thumb!

I do agree about when the teeth are coming in the babies will suck on their thumb, my daughter did that once and I took it out of her mouth and from then on she chewed on her fingers. She would never take a soother or she would chew on something hard, like her frozen key's or what not! Good advice :)

Never let my child
Nice sentiments but once they start it's hard to stop them. My daughter had a dummy but also sucked her thumb... until she was 8 from memory.

Her teeth are fine.

Mum always said
you cant throw away a thumb but you CAN hrow away a dummy. Both my babes started sucking their thumbs just after birth and I popped a dummy in and no more thumb.
