Tunes to Download for Kids and Adults Alike

MagpieGirl by MagpieGirl Talking Back(February 2007) (rank 188th)

If there's one thing I cannot bear, it's sachrine "kids music" blaring from my car stereo. When I was preggers with my first child, a friend of mine vowed never to teach them antyhing but the Beatles. His theroy? No one should have to listen to 'The Wheels on

the  Bus' on infinte repeat. In the spirit of quality tunes for everyone, here's a list of grown-up songs that work for kids. They're defintely worth the 99cent download ITunes (or Zune or Rahpsody.)  If my kids love the whole album I've linked to it. Add yours to the list below and we'll all have a playlist to save our sanity and rock the house!

Cake: Stickshifts and Saftey Belt (Fashion Nugget); Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (Fashion Nugget); Love you Madly (Comfort Eagle)

LemonJelly: Nice Weather for Ducks (Lost Horizons)

Paul Simon: Father and Daughter (Surprise), Kodachrome (Concert in the Park), Loves Me Like Rock (Concert in the Park)

Jack Johnson: Banana Pancakes, Better Together (In Between Dreams)

Al Green/Annie Lennox: Put a Little Love in Your Heart (The Best of Al Green)

Jonny Lang: Anything's Possible (Turn Around)

Harry Connick Jr: She (She)

The Little Willies: Love Me (Little Willies with Nora Jones)

Shawn Mullins: Beautiful Wreck

Corrine Bailey Rae: Girl Put Your Records On (Corrine Bailey Rae)

KD Lang: Big Boned Gal (Absolute Torch and Twang)

Hot Chip: Over and Over (Over and Over)

Fat Boy Slim: Praise You (Greatest Hits)

Waterdeep: Whenever God Shines His Light on Me (Everybody's Beautiful)

oh SUCH a great list
my kids love your cake selections, too.  madeleine has a special (terrifying) dance she does in a hot pink leotard to perhaps, perhaps, perhaps

other serious favorites:
your smiling face by james taylor
what i like about you by the romantics
anything by lisa loeb

they also love highly inappropriate things like outkast's hey ya and anything they can get away with by the black-eyed peas

Sweet Baby James
Oooh!  I forgot about James Taylor! "How Sweet it is (to be loved by you) was one my Mom used to bop around the kitchen to when I was little.

Oh so much better than "the wheels on the bus"
I love this playlist.  I was just feeling guilty the other day that I didn't know any of the kiddie songs that the other moms were singing with their kids.  I can pipe in with all the Sesame Street but I get kind of lost about the rest.  I'll be adding your tunes to mine.  Thanks.

Great Idea
We dont use a car, so it is less of an issue for us, but I do appreciate the point you are making.  We tend to make up songs when we travel cuz we are on bus/train for most of our long distances.  Maybe i need to remember to take our lil ipod thing next time and get some music we can both cope with on it.
Peace

Gone are the days of Fat Cat and Humphery B Bear.....

Does anyone remember the days when we used LP's??

I gotta say, I don't know a lot of these tunes....but I do love the idea and although I don't listen to music anymore my kids grew up with lots of it.

Mind you, I love the kiddie songs...'if you're happy and you know it - clap your hands', 'Three little pigs' - all of them....and although they can be a little out dated and sugary, I still think they are important to sing along with your child as its not so much the song - but the message in it. Many of these teach your child co-ordination, feelings and so on....

Introducing your kids to music early is great and having a play list for the car is a fantastic idea too...

Thanks for sharing this

Cheers

Lavinia

I agree with you Lavinia

I love to sing the kids songs with the little one, as she gets so excited... It really is fun, especially as she often gets her words mixed up. She loves the song 'head & shoulders, knees & toes...' so doing it with her I get a good work out, plus with her muddling the words you never know where your going to to have to touch next. Anyhow it is through songs like this that my kids learned their body parts, the alphabet & so much more. Mind you I like my own music the minute they go home.

Re: LP's Yes I remember the days & still have a few... My son tells me they are still very big in the States for some people - I have a couple of old Irish Rover albums I had when my kids were young one called Tales to Warm Your Mind, which is full of Irish lullaby's - It's a beauty & totally irreplaceable!
