Back to School and Lunches

OzBinky by OzBinky Young Parent(February 2007) (rank 17th)

So the kids are back at school again, some for the first time and some who have just started pre-school. I was one of the odd few that hated this time. I much preferred to have my kids stay home with me. Mind you, this soon changed as they developed

teenage personalities – then I didn’t mind so much.

One thing that I noticed during my years with kids at school is something I named ‘the lunch drain’ – where parents change their children’s once good-lunch time habits, to less desirable ones. It’s much easier to prepare a good wholesome meal while they are still at home then packing one for school. School lunches are also promoted by companies selling snack size chips and soft-drinks or those unhealthy snack bars which look great, but aren’t.

While you still can, encourage good eating habits at school by packing healthy lunches. There are many cheap but great options to choose from and they don’t all have to consist of the boring sandwich and fruit packs. For fussy children include them in making a healthy menu, something with variety and that they can choose from each day. For children who don’t like sandwiches you could try cutting bread into different shapes using a cookie cutter, substitute bread with pita or Turkish bread and offer yoghurt with canned fruit as a substitute for chips, biscuits and typical fruit.

During winter I would send Mic off with home made stews, stir-fry or noodles – all which he was able to heat up in the microwave at school. During summer time I would make long lasting salads such as sweet & sour pasta, potato salad and creamy pasta. I would use insulated lunch packs and ice coolers to keep them cold or his class would allow him to place it in their fridge.

There are so many options to choose from and ones which offer a healthier alternative than the typical lunch packs and ones which are financially friendly.

One other bit of advice, find out if your school or pre-school allows anything which contains peanuts in it - as there are many that don’t allow it due children with allergies. It is best to find out before you send the old peanut butter sandwiches to school and then find out that your child’s lunch was taken from them. I have heard of this happening a few times…

Cheers

Lavinia

Lunch Ideas
When my daughter first started daycare I was packing all her meals for the day.  She would have cereal, milk and bread left at the centre each week for breakfast but for the rest of the week she would have fruit or yoghurt for morning tea, hot meal for lunch, a selection of raw veges, savoury muffins, fruit or custard for afternoon tea and a sandwich for dinner with a variety or fillings or spreads, including vegemite, salad, egg, or whatever I felt like making the night before.  Now she goes to a different daycare where a main meal is provided at lunch time following healthy eating guidelines put in place by Queensland Health, and the parents take something each day to share for morning tea and something to share for afternoon tea.  Such variety doing it this way too! I went to pick her up once when I was on 3:30 finishes and they were having saos with ham, cheese, tomato and avocado on top.  My daughter loves all these things, but not all kids do. However, because they were all eating it the children less likely to enjoy those foods ate it because they all were.  Always so many things left on that bench, all kinds of fruit, cherry tomatoes, tomatoes, carrots, raw beans, celery, cheese, big tubs of yoghurt, dried apple, banana chips, so many things each day so the kids are all getting a bit of everything.  She will be going to a school where fridges and microwaves are provided so she can have her main meal at lunch time still. It's the best time to eat it.

Great Advice!

My daughter has to have 3 groups of food in her lunch-box. They have morning tea first- cheese and crackers, Lunch- vegemite sandwich (she won't eat ham and salad!) and then they have 'fruit time' which is compulsory to the whole school- Cut up apples, grapes, banana etc... I always put a couple of extras in just incase! Usually just a fruit bar or muesli bar etc...

I think it is great that they are required to eat lunch in the classroom BEFORE they go out and play to make sure all the kids are actually eating. Marni rarely comes home with anything in her lunchbox and i know she eats it cause they aren't allowed to throw anything out at school! The school is also wrapper free and have a great compost system! I love her school!!!!

I am gonna see about that fridge thing too! Sounds great! Will also try some of your other food ideas and see if they work on Marni. I get kinda bored making the same stuff for her EVERY day!

Cheers, Es...x

Thanks for the heads up
I hadnt even thought about the peanut butter!  LOL.....Although we indulge in PB&J at home we tend to take marmite and cheese on picnics and so this is what I have been putting in her lunch box.  I guess I am lucky that I did!!!
Shall look into these things next week for future reference when at school also.
Peace

Thanks for the heads up
If you dont like Aussie Vegemite or Marmite you should try the british verseion.  It is well different.  I much prefer the Aussie version!  But am learning to tolerate this stuff for the purpose of my laziness when we picnic...lol
