Dangers of smoking around an infant

lillyanka by lillyanka Talking Back(June 2006) (rank 288th)

I am concerned that my baby will have an increased risk of SIDS due to the fact that my mother is a smoker. She will want to be around the baby a lot and while she will not smoke around the baby or in the house or car, she will

still be a smoker and we all know how cig smoke lingers on a person. Will this hurt my baby? How can I approach this issue with my mother who is easily offended? Any compromises in mind? Thanks..I appreciate all the help I can get on this one!

Well, from my personal experience (and I mean mine, because when I was a baby my dad was the biggest smoker ever) I have to tell you I've only recently heard about smoking being related to SIDS. Up to about two months ago, my dad smoked 3 packs of cigarretes a day, and during our whole childhood (mine and my two siblings') he smoked inside the house. Now, all of us lived through it, although I can think of other effects smoking can have: one, my brother suffered from asthma and smoke made him go into crisis and sent him right to the hospital; two, my sister developed this awful reaction to cigarrete smoke that makes her get a huge migraine every time she's near a lit cigarrette; and three, and most important, my brother and I both became smokers in our teens, because I strongly believe nicotine becomes an important part of your chemical balance, and as you start to spend less time around someone who smokes, you start to feel the need to smoke to get the "daily supply of nicotine" you're used to. These are the people who get to be the most avid smokers: I was smoking 2 packs of marlboro menthols when I started college. A little over a month ago, I quit smoking because of my pregnancy, but I'm pretty sure that if I hadn't goten pregnant I'd be smoking as we speak. So this is something you might want to consider and it might be something you want to tell your mom.

And on smoking and SIDS, here's a couple of articles:

Re: Dangers of smoking around an infant

Hi,

Just the smell of cigarette smoke on someone is not going to hurt your baby that much. It may give the baby congestion though, which could lead to ear infections. The worst thing about cigarette smoke for babies is the carbon minoxide in the smoke. The smallest amount of carbon minoxide can suffocate a baby because their lungs are not developed enough to handle it. My 5 month old nephew died b/c my terrible stupid half-brother and his wife smoked cigarettes around him in their apartment. The official cause of death by the coroner was SIDS but their pediatrician told them that they killed him with cigarette smoke.  Whatever you do, DON'T let anyone smoke around your baby and don't let your baby be exposed to any secondhand smoke!!

Smoking
Thank you for this information. I'm in my early pregnancy  and recently moved to Paris, France from San Francisco, CA.   While I'm not a worrier by nature, the issue of second hand smoke is a huge concern for me, since smoke really IS EVERYWHERE.  I didn't ask my doctor much, I made a point to inquire how this has impacted the children in France; how it would impact my child.

She responded, as stated above, the there are many cases of asthma and allergies. Additionally, she pointed out the dark circles under the eyes of many-most people here. I have the same symptoms; my father smoked heavily in the home and car.

She heavily suggested that my husband, a smoker (who talks about quitting), always change his clothes and wash his hands when he gets home and around the baby. I assume that goes for our smoking friends as well, which will be an entirely different and sensitive matter to handle by this "non-worrier turned 'paranoid' American mom-to-be." I'm already thinking about monologues along the lines of, "Hey. I don't mean to be rude, but you know how I feel about smoke. I want to expose the kid to as little as I possibly can, so would you mind (washing your hands, etc...).....?"

Re: Smoking

Not only does smoking correlate with SIDS but when I was pregnant with my second son, Jake, we were living with my boyfriend's parents. His dad was a heavy smoker and when I went into labour and eventually and obviously delivery, the umbilical cord was so thin they said they could see through it and since Jake was 6 pounds when he was born, they said it had caused him to lose a lot of nutrients resulting in his small size. Because of the umbilical cord being so thin, the nurses had told the paedatrician that I had smoked through my pregnancy even though I have not smoked a cigarette in my life! They said if the umbilical cord had been any thinner it could have lead to a possible miscarriage!
