how to make nappy cakes

franni by franni Standing(February 2007) (rank 252nd)

THIS IS SOMETHINK THAT IM JUST GETTING INTO,

its fantastic way to make extra money, selling them on ebay or around you local area. i would love to go into buisness doing this.

heres how to make a nappy cake:

To form the top of the diaper cake, roll up a nappy, starting at the 'open' top end.

Wrap a rubber band around the rolled nappy to stop it from unrolling.

Add 5 more nappys to the rubber band.

For the middle layer, repeat step 1. Then add a new, bigger rubber band and add about 15 nappies

For the base, repeat step 2. Add a very big rubber band and add about 30 diapers.

Now that you know how big your cake will be, cut a circular base out of cardboard.

Place the largest layer of the cake on the cardboard base.

Remove one or two nappies and replace with a gift. Inside each layer, hide a surprise such as a coupon, a doll, some cream, or a piece of baby clothing.

Once you have the gifts inserted into each layer, assemble the remaining tiers of the cake.

Secure them together by carefully inserting wooden dowels through each layer from top to base.

Add a ribbon around each layer to cover the rubber bands.

To finish off (and help transport) you can wrap the "nappy cake" in cellophane or netting.

TIPS

Check whether the nappies have a nice print on them. so they dont look so boring.

Use different size nappies. Babies will very quickly outgrow them.

The numbers of nappies in each layer are just an indication and will change depending on the brand of nappy and how tight you wrap them.

For a fatter cake, add a ring of nappies to each tier.

You can buy commercial nappy cakes but people will love the fact that you've put effort into the project.

You could do this project with reusable nappies if the parents are environmentally conscious. The cake would be smaller because you don't need as many diapers and they're more expensive.

You can use the same directions, but instead of using nappies, use hand towels, decorate with small flowers and add a few small kitchen utensils, and use it as a Wedding Shower gift to the bride to be.

THINGS YOU WILL NEED:

                           Netting or cellophane

At least two packs of NAPPIES

Gifts to hide

Rubber bands (various sizes)

Wooden dowels

Cardboard large enough for the base

Colorful ribbons and bows

Re: how to make nappy cakes

They are sooo easy to make, even I can make them....really I am a creative gumby!

On the outside layers, I wrap a sheet set and then fasten with ribbon using hot melt glue gun ans stuff as many goodies inside as I can, with little scrapbooking embelishements on the ribbon to look pretty. and I also use a platter from a discount shop for the base, it can be used by the person recieving the gift after the gift is all unwrapped.
