I wrote this in February in response to
this article and I basically was confirming that moisturising does help eczema on the whole. This is because if your skin is dry you are more likely to suffer skin complaints like eczema, as the skin is essentially damaged.
I have just read some new research I thought I would add. Researchers have found a link between eczema and a mutation in the gene coding for a protein called filaggrin. Filaggrin is found in the outer layers of the skin and is essential for the structure and function of our skin. If the outerlayer of skin is not functioning properly as a barrier it allows allergens to pass through into the body, thus causing allergies and reactions.
Therefore, if we can repair the skin barrier the risk of allergy decreases. This is where taking care of your skin and moisturising it comes in.
Yes, there may still be underlying things that are causing the eczma and it will only be controlled when whatever is causing the allergy is eliminated. For some this is food related, or it can be related to other products you use - eg bubble bath, soaps with fragrance, washing powders, cleaning products etc.... However strengthening the barrier between your body and the outside world - ie your skin - will play a major factor in lessening the impact of allergens circulating in your system.
For me, I always have used creams but I am very careful as to what I use. I always say natural is best and I try to use plant based oils rather than mineral oils (eg sorbolene, petroleum jelly etc...). Olive oil is actually great for kids skin and almond oil - though not in a young child in case of nut allergy. My sister in law swears by lanolin for my niece who suffers severe allergies, but there are lots of great natural products on the market now - many actually formulated for children or babies.
Another advantage of moisturising your child every day is it gives you a great chance for skin contact and massage. I give a quick massage as I rub the cream/oil in. My kids love it and it is very soothing. I have done this since they were small babies and it also helps calm them.
Hope this helps!
