Test Drive that Stroller Before You Buy It

pfallerj by pfallerj Proud Parent(June 2006) (rank 100th)

Today's Tip - Take the stroller you want for a test drive before you buy it

My wife and I wanted a smaller stroller than the giant SUV that we have for trips to the mall and off-road adventures, so we picked a cheap-o umbrella stroller up from Target and

called it good. Then when my wife tried actually walking around with our son in it, she got annoyed. There was a bar across the back that kept her from walking behind it without sticking her butt out, so she has to walk to the side of it.

Next time, we'll probably get it out of the box, walk it around the store for a bit, kick the tires, take some sharp turns with it, just to see how she really handles.

This was great for us...
We were very lucky that when we went pram/stroller shopping every model was out on the floor so we did not have to take it out of the box... :)

It was great to find the one we wanted.....

Good advice.
We are stroller shopping at the moment. But won't actually buy until just before the baby is due. Why waste warranty time with the stroller sitting in the cupboard waiting to be used. We are looking at a 3 wheeler for walking and using most of the time and an umbrella stroller  (that suits newborn) to take on the plane for our trip to New Zealand (my husband has already bought the tickets to take baby to meet his Mum for early March next year - it the baby arrives on time he/she will be 9 weeks old) We have been encouraged to push the stroller around the shop in most shops that we visit but were planning on buying the upbrella stroller at Big W (Britax, Steelcraft "Holiday" model--if anyone has one and can give me some feedback that would be great)  I shall make sure I check it doesn't have a bar accross the back.

test it
great advice! I too had problems with my first stroller.  Its annoying that most stores have the policy that once a stroller is used they will not take it back.  Not only should you test it in the store but ask someone working in the store if ytou can take the stroller into the parking lot to see how it is on a rougher surface.

Test drive the stroller

Do the store's care if you take it, and test drive it? Thats what I was wondering actually. If they do have a problem, that do you do then?

I do agree though, you should test drive it before you buy it. I think I'm gonna do that to the next stroller we get.

Yes!

Yes, you must always try strollers out. We wanted a compact stroller to take with us to FL in Sept., plus the Graco stroller we had was part of a travel system that my son outgrew at 4 months. We tried a lot out and actually put Matthew in each of them to make sure he fit, plus that we could push it without hunching over and without hitting anything on the back, like you mentioned.

I also suggest you go to amazon.com and read reviews. I have found this to be a great starting point to shop for things before actually going out to buy.

Speaking from experience...
This is really good advice. We shopped and shopped for our stroller, and thought we were being all smart consumer like when we finally pulled the trigger. We eschewed the pricey Peg Perego (even though we loved it and it folded up so compactly) and went with a much less expensive Graco. It is a great stroller, but we had a panic attack when I could not fit into the trunk of either of our cars. What good is it if we can't take it anywhere? We accepted this reality and planned on getting a more compact stroller for actually leaving the neighborhood.

Then my wife took a stab at getting it to fit a few days later and, to my embarrassment... she did.
